We heard from EcoAction alum, Zach Van Horn, about nuclear energy and the American Nuclear Society’s Student Conference that will be happening at Penn State! We also got an update from our advisor, Derek Kalp, about our Sustainable Landscapes Implementation Plan.

FALL 2023

Dec. 7

Last meeting of the Fall Semester! We had such a fun time playing games, listening to music, and snacking on yummy food from Webster’s Bookstore Cafe at one of our favorite spots, Shavers Creek.

Merch Meeting! Our annual meeting where we make customizable merch from thrifted, second-hand clothing is always a huge success and we have so much fun doing it!

Oct. 24

SLIP Planting! Our team and some volunteers gathered on campus to participate in a planting to contribute to our Sustainable Landscapes Implementation Plan.

Oct. 12

Our advisor gave us a tree tour around Penn State’s campus! We walked around campus, saw different species, and learned about the history of tree planting and replenishing throughout the University.

We hiked behind The Arboretum to learn about some native plant species from Eric Burkhart, a Penn State professor and Program Director at Shaver’s Creek! We walked around in the Fall weather and learnt about new species, such as the Black Walnut Tree.

Sunday Brunch at Webster Cafe in downtown State College.

Sept. 8

Sustainable Landscapes Initiative Implementation Plan, funded by University Park’s Student Fee Board. We heard from landscape architects involved in the project about how to increase sustainable landscapes across PSU’s campus and support the University’s goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2035! We also had catering from Taproot Kitchen and viewed various poster boards outlining the project goals and plans.

Our first meeting of the semester was at The Arboretum! It has become an EcoAction tradition to have our first meeting of the year here! We met and talked with our advisor and current exec team, walked around and explored, and got into small groups and talked about the upcoming semester!

SPRING 2023

Apr. 26

At our last meeting of the semester, we headed over to the MorningStar Solar Home. The home was built by hundreds of Penn State students for the 2007 Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. The home was created as net-zero home and is located by Beaver Stadium! We had a great time hearing about the home from our advisor, Derek, and Barbara Duncan, a member of the Sustainability Institute.

Apr. 21

EARTH FEST! EARTHFEST! EARTHFEST! EarthFest 2023 was a HUGE success!! We had such an amazing day filled with warm weather, sustainable games, tabling from PSU and local organizations and clubs, and a concert to end the day! Thank you to everyone who attended, our club members for helping to put the event together, our club advisor for all of his amazing work, and the Student Fee Board for funding the event!

Apr. 5

Eco Action volunteered their evening at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center to do some Native Garden Planting with a group of Master Gardeners! We helped with cutting back plants, weeding, and mulching and learned many new things from our fellow gardeners. After our hard work, we took a look at some tadpole and salamander eggs in the pond, posed for some pictures, and listened to the birds.

Mar. 25

Our team headed over to Shaver’s Creek and volunteered at their annual Maple Harvest Festival! We had a great time cooking sausages for guests to enjoy with homemade pancakes and delicious maple syrup!

Mar. 19

Eco Action members spent the day with the State College Bird Club to learn about and look for PA bird species at Bald Eagle State Park. We had a great time bracing the cold weather to learn about these species!

Our club had a great time at our FIRST SPRING MEETING!! We put our creative minds together and made some environmental vision boards with old magazines, cardboard, and scrapbook paper!
