Overlord

This is yet another reference to an RPG, except that this time it references an MMO RPG, in which massive amounts of players join together online for quests and battles. This anime is called Overlord. It was made by Kugane Maruyama and was acquired by Enterbrain.

Plot

This is the best example of being trapped in a video game. After twelve years of a server, it is about to be shut down, and only four people are left, the other thirty-seven having quit the game. Momonga, the leader of the guild, decides to invite the other players to his castle for the end of the server. Only one of them shows up, and he has to leave after a short while. He decides that this is the best way anyway. When the server finally shuts down, and the screen goes black, he awakes to find himself still in his game, unable to use features like chat. The game has been created in its own reality. The whole point of the story is for Momonga to try and find other people who are in the same situation as him, and to try to figure out precisely what happened to him.

Why I Like This Anime

I love this anime because it is an excellent reference to the real-world MMORPG World of Warcraft. This is a game that has been around since 1994 when it was known as Warcraft. This game quickly became one of the best-selling games. Everyone today who has played a video game knows what this series is, and people still play it today. It is nostalgic to think that a game that came out over 20 years ago could influence modern-day anime. I might even suggest picking up one of those games for a better experience watching this anime.

The Battles

To be completely honest, a lot of the fights are one-sided because of the power that Lord Ainz Ooal Gown possesses. It’s not like they are starting out at level one. They started out at the end of a server, the max level they can possess in an MMORPG, and all the power they could want. I mean, who doesn’t want to have a realm with unlimited power, to which none can stand in your way. Some of the battles are close, but the opponent would also have to possess a power that could rival the supreme overlord. Some of the lower beings could also fight beings much more powerful than them. For example, one of the first monsters summoned was a high-level fire elemental that two of the overlord’s servants defeated. I think that if you are looking for an anime about someone becoming stronger to defeat a more powerful enemy, then this is the polar opposite of that.

Who Will Enjoy This Anime?

Obviously, there is a lot of fighting and blood in this anime, but it contains the amount of maturity that most anime has. Turn off a couple of filters, and I think that anyone can enjoy Overlord, especially people who enjoy MMORPGs. Go and watch Overlord at Crunchyroll.com.

  1. Out of all the overpowered protagonist subgenre within the entirety of all isekai produced in the last few years, I gotta say that I agree with you here about the uniqueness of Overlord in comparison to other anime adaptations. The first aspect of the show that I found interesting was the duality of showing the hero and villain sides of the main character. He helps out others when he can, but if anyone crosses him, they suffer harsh consequences. The animation quality is pretty consistent with some jumps during major fight scenes, and the openings are fantastic as well.
