Danganronpa

A little less gruesome content then the last post, I want to blog about another anime that I have watched recently. This anime is called Danganronpa, and it is about an elite high school called Hope’s Peak Academy and a group of superstar high school students that all have their own unique talents. It is produced by Lerche.

The plot of this anime includes every student trying to escape the school, which has been locked shut and impossible to breakthrough. The only way for the students to be free is if they kill a classmate and do not get caught. The way they get called out is by trial and the group deciding who did it. If the group accuses right, then the murderer gets put to death while the game goes on for the rest of them. If the group guesses wrong, then the murderer gets freed, and the rest of the group gets executed. In the beginning, no one believes that anyone would murder a classmate for a game, but the first murder happens right at the opening ceremony when Monokuma is explaining the rules of the game. The panic then begins as the students now know that people will actually die.

My favorite part of the anime is when two of the power-hungry characters get into a fight and somehow end up being friends. When one of them is going to get executed because he killed his own brother, the other actually votes against him getting killed. If the culprit did not vote for himself to die, then the rest of the group would get executed because the vote has to be unanimous. If the vote is not unanimous, then the whole group dies, and the culprit gets to go free.

I should mention that while trapped in this school, the students get access to a fully-stocked kitchen and all of the necessities they would need to survive. So why would they need to kill each other in the first place? Monokuma mentions at the end that they will be forced to live in the school forever until someone “graduates,” but he keeps adding rules as the game goes on to keep it interesting. For example, there are already security cameras everywhere so that Monokuma knows who murdered who for sure. As the game goes on, access to different floors of the building is unlocked, which unlocks more secrets to what really happened at Hope’s Peak Academy to make it like that way it is in the present day. Apparently, the students agreed to sign contracts to be there for the rest of their lives without knowing it. That’s why every student was knocked out upon approaching the academy.

This is a less gore-intensive anime considering there are not any guts popping out of people when they die like in Corpse Party. The blood is also pink instead of red for some reason. The executions are pretty clean in the fact that they do not physically show the characters being killed. Go ahead and watch it on Crunchyroll!

Corpse Party

If you like blood and gore, this is the anime for you. This is quite possibly one of the most terrifying anime I have watched, and there are some scenes that I have to look away from. I will keep this blog friendly to a certain extent, though. You have been warned. Corpse Party is made by TeamGrisGris.

This anime is adapted from the video game, Corpse Party, and the game is actually much more terrifying than the anime. The characters consist of eight-grade school children and their teacher. One of the students, Satoshi, has a little sister named Yuka, and she arrives at their school at night when they are all there, telling scary stories around a candle. At the end of their stories, they have a paper figure shaped like a human, and all grab on tightly while chanting a friendship chant because one of their classmates is moving away. They then all pull to tear it into nine pieces. Immediately after this, an earthquake happens, and the floor suddenly falls apart, and they all fall through, passing out.

The main point of why everything is happening is because previously, a murder occurred where the teacher had murdered his students with a pair of scissors, hence the gore of the anime. People literally get stabbed on screen without any censoring. The students that were killed are trapped in the school like some sort of purgatory and are trying to kill the present students. The current students must get the tongues of the murdered students to release their souls. Right away, one of the students hangs themselves in the bathroom because they did not want to end up in that place forever. Everyone eventually loses their sanity and starts killing each other if they stay there.

The absolute worst scene in this anime is when there is a flashback of the students getting their tongues cut off with scissors. One of the students even gets their entire head cut in half. That part is censored because that is way too much for anyone to handle. The animators really know how to get people to look away from the screen.

The main evil spirit is the little girl above. The lore is kind of fuzzy, but she definitely has the most kills on her record. Her kills aren’t the cleanest, either. Sometimes I regret having watched this anime because this is quite literally the definition of nightmare fuel. Some of the students even get out of the world but decide to go back in to save the rest of their friends. One of them did not want to go at first, and he ends up being the one that dies to protect the other one that went in.

To conclude this gruesome blog, I would say that this anime is for adult audiences only. I even sometimes get worried in a dark room alone from watching this anime. Different from the others, I watched this whole series on Youtube, being only four episodes long. Watch at your own risk.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind

Alright, I know I’ve covered this anime’s previous parts, but I think that part 5 deserves its fair share of reviews. This is the latest installment of the anime released in 2018. While the manga is even further ahead, if you want to watch something, this is the latest version. This is published by Shueisha and produced by David Production.

Plot

The series is set to take place two years after part four, Diamond is Unbreakable, in Italy, 2001. Giorno Giovanna, who is the son of both Dio Brando and Jonathan Joestar, joins the criminal organization Passione in the hopes of becoming a gangster and taking over the organization in the name of reform. He wants to move up the ranks to improve life in Italy. In episode one, Koichi is scammed out of his luggage by Giorno, who escapes by using his stand, Gold Experience, to make a tree to raise him to safety. This is where he finds out that Giorno is Dio’s son. Giorno then encounters Bruno, who suspects him of harming Luca. Giorno eventually encounters Polpo, another stand user, and is tasked with the job of keeping a lighter lit for 24 hours to show his trust. A lot of encounters like these happen throughout the series, with new stand users being introduced.

The Battles

Image result for muda muda muda giorno gif

Source: Tumblr

Much like the previous parts, the fights involve stands but are animated better. The fights are generally stacked against the protagonists, but the plot armor in the series definitely protects them. My favorite fight is when Giorno encounters Bruno on the train. When Bruno tries to attack him, Giorno summons forth Golden Experience and punches him across the train. The sheer might of his stand represents that he is Dio’s son for sure. Now, is his stand as powerful as The World? Definitely not, but it is still fun to watch. Another one of the battles that I think is worth some recognition is when Koichi and Giorno fight Black Sabbath. This is when we get to Koichi’s Act 3, 3 Freeze technique. He makes Black Sabbath’s hands heavier but is worried that the force will break Giorno’s legs. Luckily, he links his leg to the root of a tree to get free and throws Black Sabbath into the sunlight, his weakness.

My Compliments

I am surprised by the variety of stands that the show gives. You would think that they would run out of ideas eventually, but they keep on managing new ideas. I wouldn’t even have thought that a stand could use zippers to open up portals of nonexistence. I wonder how they come up with these ideas. Do they just sit around at a business table and blurt out random thoughts? We may never know.

Who Will Enjoy This Anime?

I think that this anime does not have a whole lot of gore, but there is definitely blood. I think that this would be suitable for anyone who is not squeamish, but even those who are can look past it. The content will keep you watching for all 39 episodes, so go to Crunchyroll.com right now to watch them all.

Castlevania

If you remember my post about Hellsing Ultimate, this anime has a similar taste. An all-powerful vampire that reaps the land to express his power and take his revenge on the city of Wallachia for the burning of his wife. This anime is made by Adi Shankar and written by Warren Ellis.

The series begins with a woman named Lisa in 1455 who wishes to be a doctor, so she travels to seek out Vlad Dracula Tepes, who has advanced scientific knowledge and technology. Dracula likes her ambition and decides to teach her his infinite wisdom while she teaches him to walk amongst men again. Eventually, the two get married. After about twenty years of this, a bishop in a town discovers her scientific equipment and accuses her of witchcraft. She is burned at the stake, and when Dracula learns of this, he is furious and vows to kill every last one of the people of Wallachia. They do not believe him and instead celebrate the day that his wife was burned a year later, which results in Dracula keeping his word and immediately killing everyone in sight. As a result of this event, the kingdom’s noble families are blamed, including the Belmonts, which the main protagonist resides in.

Trevor Belmont is someone who fights monsters like vampires. Still, the people had no longer wanted him around because they thought that his family was one of the families that were responsible for the chaos in Wallachia. During his first fight with Alucard, Dracula’s son, he was victorious and now has formed a team with him and the sorcerer he had met along the way. Their goal is now to kill Dracula to stop the chaos in the world. I like the fights in this anime because of the medieval aspects. Only swords and bows are typically used in battles, with the exception of magic by some. Obviously, magic has been outlawed in Wallachia, and those who used it were known as witches and were burned at the stake like Dracula’s wife.

Why I Like This Anime

Source: Amino

I love this anime because it has such a great comparison to Hellsing Ultimate. They both have extreme blood and gore and have vampiric powers. Hellsing Ultimate takes a more modern approach to vampires, while Castlevania stays in medieval times. Alucard in Hellsing Ultimate is like the second form of Dracula because he can take either form, except Alucard uses guns instead of swords and shields. You could almost say that Hellsing Ultimate is the continuation of Castlevania in the modern age. Castlevania has an excellent way of characterizing the medieval time’s fear of witchcraft and how powerful the catholic church was. Back then, if you didn’t go to church, then you were viewed as a sadist.

Who Will Enjoy This Anime?

Since this has about the same extreme graphic content as Hellsing Ultimate, I would say ages sixteen and up can enjoy this anime. This time, however, you can go to Netflix for this original series instead of Crunchyroll because of it being American-based.

Seven Deadly Sins

Yet another anime with fighting in it. Big surprise. This anime relates to Dragon Ball Z in the sense that they both have power levels. While the power levels in the later soon become irrelevant, the power levels in this anime stick around for a bit longer. Nakaba Suzuki makes this anime.

Plot

The Seven Deadly Sins were once a group of active knights in the region of Britannia, who had disbanded after they supposedly plotted to overthrow the Liones Kingdom. Rumor had it that a group of holy knights defeated them, but it was also rumored that they were still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Knights had staged a coup d’état and captured the king, which had made them the new, tyrannical rulers of the kingdom. One of the princesses, Elizabeth, then goe on a journey to find the Seven Deadly Sins to help take back the kingdom. They then fight the Ten Commandments, in which Meliodas is revealed to be the Demon King’s cursed son.

The Battles

There are a lot of great fights in this anime, and my personal favorites are whenever Escanor is fighting because he starts out as a scrawny guy. When he then reveals that he is one of the Seven Deadly Sins, the sin of pride, he transforms into a massive, muscular guy and wields his one-handed ax that is so heavy that when someone tried to pick it up with two hands, it didn’t budge.

As the sin of pride, he is a cocky guy. As you can see from the image above, he basically wields the power of the sun. One of my favorite battles of his is when he fights Meliodas when he is revealed to be the leader of the Ten Commandments. At first, he dominates Escanor, but that is before the clock hits noon. The power levels are still making sense at this point, with Escanor having a max power level of one-hundred fourteen thousand and Meliodas having a power level of one-hundred and forty-two thousand. Escanor is trying his hardest to win against him with all of this moves when his strength increases with the light of day. He reveals his form that is called “The One,” which is supposedly unstoppable. This form changes his body and his voice to that of a deity, and Meliodas is now no match for him.

What I Like About This Anime

Unlike Dragon Ball Z, this anime deserves some credit with sticking with a relative power level system. Even when a demon and a god are fighting, they still have power levels that can be described in numbers. This gives the viewer an accurate description and scale of the battles taking place. Power levels don’t even exist anymore in the Dragon Ball Z universe because some of the characters have surpassed time itself.

Who Will Enjoy This Anime

This anime is actually quite suitable for all ages. While there are blood and weapons, it is elementary in its violence. I would say that anyone in middle school and up can enjoy this anime to its fullest. Go watch it on Crunchyroll.com for a great experience!

Overlord

This is yet another reference to an RPG, except that this time it references an MMO RPG, in which massive amounts of players join together online for quests and battles. This anime is called Overlord. It was made by Kugane Maruyama and was acquired by Enterbrain.

Plot

This is the best example of being trapped in a video game. After twelve years of a server, it is about to be shut down, and only four people are left, the other thirty-seven having quit the game. Momonga, the leader of the guild, decides to invite the other players to his castle for the end of the server. Only one of them shows up, and he has to leave after a short while. He decides that this is the best way anyway. When the server finally shuts down, and the screen goes black, he awakes to find himself still in his game, unable to use features like chat. The game has been created in its own reality. The whole point of the story is for Momonga to try and find other people who are in the same situation as him, and to try to figure out precisely what happened to him.

Why I Like This Anime

I love this anime because it is an excellent reference to the real-world MMORPG World of Warcraft. This is a game that has been around since 1994 when it was known as Warcraft. This game quickly became one of the best-selling games. Everyone today who has played a video game knows what this series is, and people still play it today. It is nostalgic to think that a game that came out over 20 years ago could influence modern-day anime. I might even suggest picking up one of those games for a better experience watching this anime.

The Battles

Image result for overlord fight gif

Source: Steam

To be completely honest, a lot of the fights are one-sided because of the power that Lord Ainz Ooal Gown possesses. It’s not like they are starting out at level one. They started out at the end of a server, the max level they can possess in an MMORPG, and all the power they could want. I mean, who doesn’t want to have a realm with unlimited power, to which none can stand in your way. Some of the battles are close, but the opponent would also have to possess a power that could rival the supreme overlord. Some of the lower beings could also fight beings much more powerful than them. For example, one of the first monsters summoned was a high-level fire elemental that two of the overlord’s servants defeated. I think that if you are looking for an anime about someone becoming stronger to defeat a more powerful enemy, then this is the polar opposite of that.

Who Will Enjoy This Anime?

Obviously, there is a lot of fighting and blood in this anime, but it contains the amount of maturity that most anime has. Turn off a couple of filters, and I think that anyone can enjoy Overlord, especially people who enjoy MMORPGs. Go and watch Overlord at Crunchyroll.com.

Goblin Slayer

Continuing the list past ten, even though the title of this series says “top ten,” I would like to mention a shorter anime that I came across when I first started to play Dungeons and Dragons. The anime is called Goblin Slayer, and it is based on a fantasy Dungeons and Dragons realm. Kumo Kagyu created it.

Source: IMDb

Plot

The series does not even include Goblin Slayer in the beginning. It starts with a young priestess looking to become an adventurer. The youngest someone can be when becoming an adventurer is fifteen. A group overhears that she is ready to go on her first adventure and offers to join their group. Their first quest would involve going into a cave and killing off the goblins that have invaded. It seems easy at first, but when they get deeper into the cave, the overwhelming amount of goblins is too much for the party to handle. The whole party is killed, and the priestess is the last one alive, and it looks like she is going to be killed, but that is when Goblin Slayer appears. He ends up saving her and killing all of the goblins himself. Later he and the priestess form a party and eventually meet up with three other party members. Together they go on quests specifically to kill goblins.

Who is Goblin Slayer?

The only thing we know about Goblin Slayer is that a goblin raid killed his family, and he made a vow to kill every last one of them. He stays at his only childhood friend’s house and goes to the guild to complete quests so that he can pay his rent there. There are actually ranks at the guild, and Goblin Slayer is a silver rank. The priestess eventually obtains obsidian rank. Goblin Slayer does not mention his real name to anyone, and only at the end of season one, he takes off his mask, revealing his face. Ironically, he actually has a mentor that is a goblin that can speak the common language. Ever since he was a child, he grew up learning how to kill goblins. He was never someone who talked a lot. He usually spoke in single words or sentences.

As stated in the introduction, I was introduced to Dungeons and Dragons when this anime was still coming out with new episodes every week. I usually played a wizard and had a great time with my campaign. Using this anime, I had fuel to bring to the table, as it increased my knowledge of the game. For those of you do not know what Dungeons and Dragons is, it is a role-playing game where you can create your own characters using classes and races, who all have their own abilities and benefits, so depending on the type of campaign the dungeon master is running, you can make a character that is best suited to the group.

Who is Going to Enjoy This?

Only the first episode is extremely gory, but the rest of the episodes do involve a lot of blood and graphic fights, so I would say that anyone in high school or above can enjoy the anime to its fullest. As always, these shows are available at Crunchyroll.com.

One Punch Man

I loved watching this anime, and so did everyone else, apparently, because it recently got a second season. This anime makes it on the list because of the sheer overpowered main character, Saitama. It is made by One and animated by Yusuke Murata.

Plot

The whole series is based around the character, Saitama, who is apparently the strongest being in the universe who no one knows about. He started out as a regular guy, but then later went under intense physical training to strengthen his body. This was literally regular human training, nothing special. He did one-hundred push-ups, one-hundred sit-ups, one hundred squats, and a ten-kilometer run every single day. Of course, no one believes that, but when he is in action, it is hard not to take him seriously. When he was at the Hero Association’s physical and academic testing, he scored a perfect score on the physical part, crushing all of the records, but only scored a seventy percent overall because of the educational portion. Genos, soon to be Saitama’s disciple, scored a perfect score because he is a cyborg.

The Battles

Image result for saitama gifs

Source: Pinterest

Most of the battles in this anime are one-sided when they involve Saitama. There is a reason why he is called “One Punch Man,” after all. What you are seeing above is his match against Genos, which was pretty boring for Saitama, despite Genos trying his hardest to defeat his master. Once Saitama took out a monster that was double the height of a skyscraper with just one punch. No one knows why or how he has this type of power, but he continues to climb the rankings at the Hero Association.

The Rankings of Heroes

Image result for saitama punches boros gif

Source: gfycat

So there is all of this talk about heroes and their rankings. There is a scale from S to C that ranks a hero based on their abilities and strengths. The S-level heroes typically have supernatural power and are called only when the fate of the world is at stake. Since Genos scored a perfect score on his test, he was immediately placed in the S-class, while Saitama was placed in the C-class. Sometimes, when Saitama defeated strong enemies, he wanted to make people believe that he stole the credit from the other stronger heroes that participated in the battle. The reason he did this was that he is only a hero for fun. He did not want to be famous among the public, as some of the other heroes did. He continues to climb the ranking as he defeats enemies, eventually reaching the B class in the second season. He obviously deserves to be in the S-class, considering that he has taken out God-level threats.

Types of Threats

With levels of heroes comes levels of threats. There is a wolf, tiger, demon, dragon, and God level threat, each increasing in severity. When it comes to the God-level threats, Saitama is also called with the S-class heroes. One of the S-class heroes, Silverfang, is an old martial artist that sees Saitama’s strength and insists that he comes along with everyone else.

Conclusion

So I would say that anyone of any age can enjoy this anime as it is not as bloody or gory as the other anime on this list. Go out and watch the new second season at Crunchyroll.com!

Highschool of the Dead

I had been out of anime to watch for a while, so I started looking around for some good-rated anime that everyone else was watching. I eventually stumbled across Highschool of the Dead and immediately started binge-watching the whole series. It is made by Yen Press and Kurt Hassler.

The main idea of this anime is that a random zombie outbreak occurs in Japan and the rest of the world, but the first scene we get of it is at a random high school. A zombie is running into the main gate as the faculty goes to see who it is. One of the teachers eventually gets bitten by the zombie and dies, only to come back as a zombie and bite another faculty member. The main protagonist, Takashi, sees this from an outside staircase and immediately runs to his friend Rei’s classroom and pulls her and her boyfriend out. The announcement over the intercom reaches the students, but the principal dies on the intercom, so a massive panic runs throughout the school. Long story short, the only survivors meet up and escape the school on a bus. They try and get out of the city, but it is already infested. The number of people infected has reached two million on the first day.

What I Like

I know that these are only high-schoolers, but they know a surprising amount about how to survive in an apocalypse. They have weapons like baseball bats and sharpened broom handles, but one student, Hirano, makes a weapon out of a nail gun and tapes a sight onto it. He is kind of a maniac-nerd when it comes to weaponry and wars, so he is a great friend to have in the apocalypse. The animation is also on point so we can have up-close action without any lagging. A lot of fast-paced action occurs in this anime and they nail it.

My Favorite Part

Related image

Source: gfycat

My favorite part of this anime is when Hirano and Takashi look through a pair of binoculars and see a little girl across the street that is about to be eaten by a horde of zombies. right as she is about to get bit, Hirano pulls out a long-range assault rifle and shoots the zombie in the head. The zoom-in and the voice line of Hirano is awesome and the buildup is a must-see. I do not think that there is a single scene in this anime that tops that one. First of all, they had to crack open a safe in a random house to find a full arsenal of assault rifles and ammo. The fact that Hirano already knows how to use these weapons just blows my mind.

Who Can Watch This Anime

I am going to be completely honest with the rating of this anime. This would correspond to an R-rated movie in the movie theatre because of the over-exaggeration and the literal nudity. This is probably the most mature anime I have watched, and it definitely contains blood and gore because the zombies quite literally rip people apart. Anyone who can look past these things can go to Crunchyroll or YouTube and watch all twelve episodes.

KonoSuba

This anime caught my attention because it had a relatively good relationship with Dungeons and Dragons, a game I play in my free time. This anime makes it on the list for its creativity and hilarious plot. KonoSuba is written by Natsume Akatsuki and produced by Rie Ogura.

The Characters

The main protagonist is named Kazuma, and he starts as a regular guy who is obsessed with video games. One day he goes out of the house for once and hallucinates the image that a girl is about to get run over by a truck. Of course, this did not happen, and he died of a heart attack in the process. Once he dies, he gets sent to a fantasy world and makes a group with certain people. Aqua is a goddess who offered to reincarnate him into a fantasy world, which Kazuma chooses to take Aqua into with him. She cannot return to the afterlife until the main villain, the Devil King, is defeated. They then come across a wizard who specializes in explosion magic. Her name is Megumin, and she can only use her magic once per day since it is so powerful. She can create explosions the size of large cities, and it destroys everything in its path. The fourth member in the group is named Darkness, who is a crusader but is particularly lewd in battle.

The Plot

Image result for megumin explosion gifs

Source: Giphy

While Kazuma has no intention of defeating the Devil King, he gets wrapped into battles with his generals, anyway. Of course, Aqua wants to get the job done as quickly as possible, but they need to level up and get stronger by fighting weaker enemies. They take on guild requests and go on missions to try and level up, eventually bringing one of the Devil King’s generals to their home town. Ultimately, that battle is won, but they have to pay for the damages to the city. This process continues until Kazuma is charged with crimes, and he has to go to court and plead innocent. This process is lengthy, and the doings of his team do not help his cause. They had been continuously trying to break him out of the prison he was being held in until the trial began, of course failing.

Complete Nonsense

A lot of the story involves the group getting involved in unimportant events that do not affect the plot of the story. The citizens are not very bright and see them as Devil King servants, and that spans over a few episodes. The series is only two seasons of KonoSuba, and they are about eleven episodes long. That does not leave a whole lot of room for filler. However, there is a movie coming out in about two weeks called “The Legend of Crimson,” so I believe that this series will continue.

Who Can Watch This?

This series has a little less partial nudity than Kill La Kill, but I think that anyone who is in their teens can appreciate this anime.  All of the episodes and the movie trailer are available at Crunchyroll.com.
