Kill la Kill

Ok, I admit that this anime is quite weird, but I enjoyed binge-watching it in a day. That was something that I loved to do in the summer. I would go on the internet and search for some short anime to watch. Kill la Kill makes it on the list because of the sheer creativity. It emerged from Studio Trigger and had three volumes.

Plot

Now this anime is about a girl named Ryuko Matoi who is searching for her father’s killer. She has half of a scissor given to her that she uses as her weapon. She attends a high school called Honnouji Academy, whose students wear Goku uniforms (no, they are not from Goku) that were constructed with Life Fibers. Her scissor blade, conveniently, can cut through these uniforms. She eventually stumbles across a sentient sailor uniform that she names Senkestu. He is made entirely of Life Fibers and can transform her. One of her goals is to defeat the leader of the academy, Kiryuin.

More Powerful Goku Uniforms

Some uniforms are more powerful than others. The rankings are one-star, two-star, and three-star Goku uniforms. The more stars, the more powerful they are. Kiryuin has her Elite Four, who all wear three-star Goku uniforms.

Plot Twists

There are actually some major plot twists that occur in this anime. Spoiler alert, Kiryuin is Ryuko’s sister, not to mention that their mother is the CEO of the company that has a monopoly in the Life Fiber market. Ryuko actually gets brainwashed into fighting her sister. The Elite Four do not have their Goku suits anymore because Ryuko had already defeated and destroyed them. Their mother has a plan to destroy the earth and propagate Life Fibers throughout the universe.

Best Fighting Scenes

Some of my favorite fighting scenes include all of the battles between Ryuko and the Elite Four because this was the process that she had to go through to learn all of her new abilities. To think that such an ordinary high-school student would go from wielding a sharp piece of metal to having a magical uniform and being an expert in fighting enemies with Life Fibers. When she was fighting the marching band conductor Nonon Jakuzure, she has to learn how to fight while not being able to hear anything, not to mention that her Regalia suit can fly. This is where Senketsu evolves, and now he can apparently fly, as well. Eventually, she was able to have Senketsu only focus on the sound of her heartbeat so that he could concentrate.

Some Disclaimers

So there is a reason why this anime is so weird. This anime has an MA rating. Meaning that it is for adults. The whole anime has a LOT of partial nudity, and if you watch the anime, you will know what I mean. Life Fibers make up clothes, and when they get destroyed, so do the user’s clothes. If you are not fussy to that sort of thing, then you can actually appreciate what this anime has to offer.

Final Thoughts

I really did enjoy watching this anime, and I think that anyone who’s in their late teens and up can enjoy this anime as well. Just be prepared to close the Crunchyroll tab in case anyone walks in the room.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (Part 4)

Recently I posted about part three of this series, but the fact that all of the parts are so different, they could be considered separate anime. This anime makes it on the list because it is an excellent sequel to the previous part. They all have mostly different main protagonists. This part has Josuke Higashikata as the main character. All parts have the same creator, David Production.

Main Characters

Josuke is the illegitimate son of Joseph Joestar. Therefore, he has a stand called “Shining Diamond.” The rules for stands is that you have to get shot by a specific arrow or be a Joestar to have one. Jotaro is still in this anime, but he is much older instead of being only 17 in part three. Koichi goes to the same school as Josuke, so they already know each other. The main villain is Yoshikage Kira, who has a stand called “Deadly Queen.” Okuyasu Nijimura is someone they meet on the way, but he has a stand called “The Hand,” which can scrape away anything from existence.

Stands

Josuke has a stand called “Shining Diamond,” which can throw punches at speeds of over 40 kilometers per hour. His unique ability is repairing broken items and healing wounds. Jotaro still has his “Star Platinum,” but since he can readily stop time now, it has been renamed, “Star Platinum The World.” Okuyasu has a stand called “The Hand,” which can scrape things away to somewhere unknown. These things include space, which he can scrape away to pull his opponents in closer. Koichi’s stand is a little different from the others because he got shot with an arrow to get his stand. It started as an egg, but then evolved into two other forms with increasing power. The last form can “freeze” the opponents by placing a hefty amount of weight on them.

Plot

The plot is pretty easy to follow along because there are already characters from the previous part. Jotaro has to find a kid named Josuke Higashikata and eventually finds him beating up bullies with his stand. Jotaro tries to intervene, but he insults Josuke’s hair in the process, ending up in a brawl.

The whole plot revolves around fighting minor enemies until getting to the main villain, Yoshikage Kira. He has a stand called “Killer Queen,” and it can turn anything into a bomb. Like Koichi’s stand, his stand also evolves and gets different types of bombs. His second bomb is an infrared tracking bomb that explodes whenever it gets close to the target. It also has the third bomb that is called “Bites The Dust” and can rewind time one hour back to prevent anyone from investigating him. He eventually comes into contact with all of the heroes and is about to press the button to activate the third bomb when Koichi freezes his hand.

Jotaro then has to get within five meters so he can stop time and reach him. Koichi bought him enough time so that he can do this.

Who’s Able to Watch This Anime?

There is the same amount of blood and gore as in part three, so pretty much anyone can watch this anime. Lots of fast-paced action and unique abilities will keep you watching every second. There is even a part five anime out, so if this is not enough for you, then there is much more to watch. As always, all of these anime shows are going to be available at Crunchyroll.com, where you can view all of your favorite shows for absolutely no cost.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

The Japanese stereotypes come to life as we discuss this anime. This anime makes it on the list because of the humorously fleshed-out stereotypes. It is full of characters shouting “NANI” and “NANDATO” every episode. While there are five parts to this anime, I will be discussing my favorite part, which is part 3. It is called “Stardust Crusaders” and made by David Production.

Setting

This anime takes place in a modern-day setting, nothing too special. The area shifts around from Japan and America to all across Asia. It will all eventually end in Egypt. The specific encounters lead to the heroes being in the ocean, on planes, through deserts, and in cities.

Plot

At the beginning of the arc, Jotaro Kujo got put into jail for getting in a street fight. His mother comes to see him with his grandfather, Joeseph Joestar. The catch is that he brings his friend Avdol that he met in Egypt. This part is where physiological manifestations called “stands” are introduced. Stands have different statistics, including six different attributes. These include destructive power, speed, range, persistence, precision, and development potential. They can be ranked from “A” to “E.”

The two brawl, with Jotaro’s stand being revealed as Star Platinum, who possesses high power. Avdol’s only job was to get Jotaro out of the cell, and when he did, he turned his back on him. When Jotaro returns to school, a student named Kakyoin attacks him with his stand, but Jotaro ends up winning the battle. Jotaro finds something stuck in Kakyoin’s head that is controlling him and pulls it out, returning him to his normal state. Back at home, Jotaro’s mother contracts a sickness caused by Dio, the main villain of the past two parts. His stand is called “The World.” To stop this sickness, they need to travel to Egypt and kill Dio. Dio has planned for this and has sent people with robust stands after the group. After many encounters, the group eventually gets to Egypt with the final battle between Jotaro and Dio.

The Final Battle

Let’s talk about the insanity of Dio’s stand. His stand has the power to stop time for a given amount of seconds, eventually reaching eleven seconds. The epic battle is so fast-paced since the stands can move at speeds faster than the human eye can track.

Image result for star platinum vs the world gif

Source: Giphy

This is my favorite battle since the full potentials of the stands are being used. Jotaro’s stand shouts “Ora” every time he throws a punch and Dio’s shouts “Muda,” which means useless. It is just a bunch of yelling and punching. Not to mention that Dio heals fast since he put on a special mask from part one. Star Platinum gains the ability to stop time as well because his stand and Dio’s are the same type of stand. While Jotaro can only stop time for two seconds at this point, Dio can stop it for eleven.

My Favorite Special Move

By far, Dio’s “Road Roller” move is my favorite from the series. He stops time and starts counting, then summons a steam roller and flattens the enemy. If the steam roller does not kill the enemy on contact, then he proceeds to follow up with a “Muda” barrage, punching it into the target. This happened between Jotaro and Dio when Jotaro attempted to punch the steam roller back at Dio. It was an epic battle of barrages.

Who Can Watch This Anime?

Anyone who loves fast action and a little bit of gore will love this anime. The brutal beatdowns are bound to keep you entertained for every single episode. The face-smashing never gets old. Watch every episode at crunchyroll.com.

Akame Ga Kill!

When I first started watching anime after DBZ, I wanted to find a shorter series of animes that were not longer than thirty episodes. I came across Akame Ga Kill, made by Square Enix, and the episodes are around twenty minutes each, but they keep you intrigued until the very end. I had actually binge-watched the whole series in one day. This anime makes it on the list because it has one of my favorite concepts: special weapons.

Image result for akame ga kill

Source: Hulu

Background

The setting takes place in an empire for most of the show. Tatsumi is the main character and starts as an ordinary warrior trying to enlist in the army. He then gets scammed out of all of his money by a member of Night Raid, which is the organization he eventually joins. When Tatsumi is searching for his friends that were taken in by a corrupted wealthy family, he finds them dead or dying in a nearby shed behind the mansion. Night Raid shows up and knows about the corruption, but Tatsumi kills the corrupted daughter himself. Night Raid likes what they see, and force him to join.

Imperial Arms

The whole idea that makes the show interesting is the use of weapons called imperial arms. An old king had all of the strongest warriors and spellcasters to craft the most powerful weapons to protect the kingdom. There are twenty-three imperial arms in total. Everyone in Night Raid has one but Tatsumi, but when “Bro” dies, he gives him Incursio, which attunes to his body shape and transforms.

This imperial arm is as an armor type made from an S-class dragon. Whenever Tatsumi used it, he gets a full suit of armor and a spear to fight. This armor is one of my favorite imperial arms because whenever he summons the armor, he shouts “Incursio” as loud as he can and brings the armor forth.

My Personal Favorite Imperial Arms

While Incursio is one of my favorite imperial arms, some others top it. For example, Mine’s Pumpkin gun is incredible because it is a weapon based on the amount of danger the user encounters. If the user is in life-threatening danger, then the imperial arm can make craters in solid concrete. It has a lot of range as well, with Mine being named the “genius sniper.” She once took out a target from a place so far that Tatsumi could only see him with binoculars. Another weapon that deserves some recognition is Akame’s Murasame sword, which is named the “one-shot.” With just a tiny cut, the poison will kill the affected person. This weapon basically makes the user an assassin because they can get in and out without being noticed by even the person killed.

Plot

The unique thing about this anime is no character is safe from dying. It seems like every episode a main character dies and the group is accepting of it. They signed up for the job knowing that death was going to be apart of it eventually. The plot is linear, though, because the viewer can pick out the evils and understand what the final battle is going to be because of the goals of Night Raid.

Who Can Watch This?

Image result for akame ga kill fighting gifs

Anyone who loves weapons and faced-paced action will love this anime. I will warn everyone that this has a little bit of blood and gore attached to it. Not like Hellsing Ultimate, but it is there. I would say any high school kids and above should find it appealing.  I love the animation style of the anime because of the crystal-clear visuals and fight scenes. Every time I tune into an episode, I love watching the experts use the weapons. Since I binge-watched the anime in a day, it kept me entertained. Go out and watch every single second of this brutal anime!

The Rising of the Shield Hero

Ever feel outcast from a group? This anime falls on this list because of the pure relatability and powers that the heroes have. Imagine reading a book in a library, turning to a blank page, and immediately being sucked into an alternate reality where you are the hero that is supposed to save that world. The anime came out in early 2019, and Kinema Citrus made it. This one is not one of my top favorites, but the uniqueness earned it a spot on the list.

The Rising of the Shield Hero

Source: Crunchyroll

The Beginning

The story starts with Naofumi, the future shield hero, going to a library to read up on some material while he narrates about his current life of ease. He opens a particular book about the four heroes and turns to the section where the shield hero would be, and it is not there. When he realizes this, he finds himself next to three other random people in another reality. They all have weapons on them as well. The four of them are greeted by their summoners, who request them to see the king immediately.

It is crazy that he has a stereotype of being the weakest hero out of the four. When the king told his people to group up with the four heroes, everyone went to the other three, leaving Naofumi alone. Long story short, he goes to a slave owner and buys himself a slave called Raphtalia (who is in the bottom right). She is just a child, but Naofumi buys her because she was cheap. They go off and try to farm experience points, and when Raphtalia levels up, she also matures. The whole idea is to level up to defeat the oncoming waves of enemies trying to destroy the world. When Naofumi levels up, he also obtains new shields with the Wrath Shield being the most powerful. While it comes with benefits, there is a curse from the dragon he killed that takes control.

Cast Out

Now, the other heroes are way stronger than the shield hero throughout about half of the show. There comes a time where the heroes reach a level cap, and whenever the other heroes reached it, they automatically got the cap removed by the three heroes church. Notice how it is “three” and not four because everyone hates the shield hero. They refuse him the removal of the cap so he cannot get any stronger. Even so, Naofumi is still stronger at that point because of his wit and teammates.

Content

Now let’s talk about the plot and features of the anime. Kinema Citrus makes the viewer feel sorry for Naofumi as he was cast out without even doing anything wrong, not to mention he got accused of numerous crimes. The plot is pretty linear in terms of objectives and goals. The only thing new would be the enemies and the types of shields Naofumi gets. The art style is genius, however. Being a relatively new anime, the producers likely have the latest animation technology to make it more appealing to the viewer. The fight scenes are fantastic so that the viewer cannot blink without missing something amazing. The soundtracks fit the battles so well that the viewer has to put on headphones or they will lose out on everything.

Not as Gorey

Unlike Hellsing Ultimate, this anime is probably suitable for everyone. Ok, PG-13 is a better rating since people and creatures die. I picked it up while watching a commercial on Crunchyroll before the new episode of another anime came out. Anyone who likes fighting and getting stronger like DBZ fans will love this anime. It has such high ratings that it is almost impossible to dislike. Get out there and watch one or all twenty-five episodes now.

Hellsing Ultimate

Hellsing Ultimate by Kouta Hirano is my second favorite anime because of the sheer creativity involved. This “sequel” aired after the original Hellsing aired, but it was meant to be an accurate representation of the manga. The difference between Hellsing Ultimate and other anime is excessive blood and gore content. If you have a week stomach or hate watching when limbs get chopped off, then this anime is not for you. Every episode is about fifty minutes long and always keeps the viewer watching until the very last second. I’ll try to keep this PG-13.

The Introduction

Things get off to a quick start. The series immediately introduces the problem of third and fourth-degree vampires causing havoc across England. These vampires are said to be weak when we get more information about what the Hellsing Organization has in store. The Hellsing Organization is in charge of dealing with supernatural problems by using their supernatural beings and armed forces. It is quite fun to watch them demolish these scum in brutal ways. The leader of this organization is Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, who had it handed down to her by her father when he died from poisoning from his brother, Robert Hellsing. His brother’s plan was to kill him to take control, but instead, the authority was handed down to Integra, who was just a child at the time. Robert then tried to kill Integra, but her father told her, before he died, to go down into the dungeon to find her salvation. There, she finds Alucard in a straitjacket. Robert shoots her and the blood splashes onto Alucard, and he awakens.

Alucard is Over-Powered!

My absolute favorite quality of this anime is the fact that no one can stand up to Alucard. As said by Integra, the only way to kill a vampire is with a stronger, more powerful vampire. Alucard is considered over-powered because of his regeneration and strength, but that is what keeps the viewer intrigued. Watching Alucard slaughter his opponents with ease and slowly revealing his real powers throughout the series is genius on Hirano’s part. Each episode would introduce Alucard’s healing abilities, restraint levels, and all-around cockiness. He even gets weapons made for him by Hellsing’s butler, Walter, who is an ex-vampire hunter.

Walter C. Dornez: the creator of Alucard’s weapons.

Alucard’s Weapons

Now let’s talk about Alucard’s choice of weapons. He only uses two pistols, one called the Hellsing Arms .454 Casull and the other being the Jackal. His .454 Casull pistol is just a semi-automatic weapon that fires silver bullets and is fired at velocities faster than the eye can see. Later Alucard obtains a second pistol, the Jackal, to face the Iscariot Organization’s super-human, Anderson. If you thought that the first one packed a punch, then this is about a hundred times more powerful. Compared to his first Colt 1911 based pistol, the Jackal fires 13mm rounds and weighs 16kg. This gun does not just put holes in things but rips things apart.

Viewer Discretion is Advised

Anyone who wants to blow off steam and watch one-sided battles would enjoy this anime. The plot is not linear. Twists occur every episode, and plot armor is only used on Alucard, Integra, and Alucard’s student, Seras Victoria, to keep the anime interesting. This content is considered a mature anime so the cliche, “viewer discretion is advised,” takes effect here.

Top Anime to Watch in 2019

As I begin my anime evaluations, I would like to discuss my all-time favorites first, while also looking at some other anime that caught my eye. Some of these anime have been around for decades but still hold their own in 2019. All of the anime listed in this blog are available at Crunchyroll.com.

Dragonball Z and Dragonball Super are part of the same series made by Akira Toriyama. This anime is by far my number one choice and the anime that got me started in the first place. The main element of this anime uses martial arts and science fiction to describe the use of “ki,” which is considered energy or plasma. If powering up and lots of yelling intrigues you, then this is absolutely for you.

Image result for dbs title

Source: Dragon Ball Fandom

The setting takes place in multiple planets and universes around age 850-900 but has a futuristic point of view such as flying cars and capsules that can expand into vehicles. The main character, Goku, is a Saiyan that came to Earth after his planet gets destroyed by Frieza, emperor of most galaxies at the time. Dragonball Z depicts new enemies arising and Goku and his warriors having to train until they reach new levels to stop them.

It’s almost like the series has plotlines for every major fight. The depth of the characters introduced in each saga is so unique and fresh that the audience never gets bored. Each adventure of the series has a different plotline. The battles do not get stale, either, because there is always something new the animators can bring to the table. The main antagonists include Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, Majin Buu, Beerus, and Jiren. Akira Toriyama even went back to make movies about Frieza and Beerus, pulling in millions of dollars from the growing audience.

A profound staple of this series is when it pulls the viewer in with its surreal transformations. All of the Saiyans can transform into different levels of power known as “Super Saiyan” (abbreviated by SSJ). The different levels past their base forms include (in the order above) SSJ, SSJ2, SSJ3, SSJ God, and Super Saiyan Blue.

Not to mention that Akira Toriyama gets creative with all of the transformations. Goku learns a technique called the Kaio-Ken, which is an energy multiplier, and he can use it in combination with his Super Saiyan Transformations. The fact that imagination can take us places like this is breath-taking. Who doesn’t want to power up when they’re angry?

Image result for next time on dragon ball z meme

I love the cliffhangers that make me want to see the next week’s episode right away. Everyone at my high school would be talking about what they saw and theorize about what would happen next week! The anime even has a deeper meaning to it rather than just yelling. Motivation from this series inspires people like me to go to the gym and train to get stronger. If Goku can train and reach new heights, then why can’t we? Sure, we can’t transform like him (yet), but what’s stopping us from getting in the gym and pushing our limits?

A good anime always has a unique element of fantasy that ordinary people would think impossible. It brings to life ideas and imagination that wouldn’t be possible without creators like Akira Toriyama and other creators. Both Dragonball Z and Dragonball Super are worth watching, even though together they are over 400 episodes long (not to mention even better movies). Go out and watch just one episode and you’ll be there for hours before you know it.
