It is so strange to think that only a year ago, I was walking in the shoes of the new Schreyer freshmen. My feet hurt just as much this year as last, but my experience with SHOTIME has already been vastly different as a mentor rather than mentee. Without the nerves and uncertainty, I have been able to enjoy the events, all the while observing the interactions and listening to the questions that are all so familiar to me. As I handed out t-shirts to many timid new students, I thought about how those nerves will slowly turn into confidence over the next few weeks, and I love the fact that I get to be a part of that transformation.
My favorite part of the day was meeting my SHOTIME group and starting to get to know their unique personalities. Aaron and I have some very outgoing mentees, and I had great conversations with them about their high school extracurriculars and what they hope to become involved with here on campus. Our ice breakers were quickly replaced by conversation about majors and organizations, and in general, there was a very positive vibe amongst my members. The Blue and White dinner was delicious and well-decorated, and my mentees really enjoyed the performance and cotton candy in Simmons courtyard. The other highlight was Playfair, of course, which our mentees loved. Running in the lines and participating in the Rocks Paper Scissors tournament were such a blast, and I enjoyed meeting freshmen who are not in my own group. Overall, I thought the day went very well and that events ran smoothly. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring!
