Linguistics Class: “Variation in Modern German”
Taught, in English, by Dr. Mike Putnam
German is the native language of approximately 100 million people worldwide, and the second language for another 80-85 million! Although teachers and students are exposed to the standard language in formal education settings, German, like any other natural language, has several dialects, regiolects, and other varieties (e.g., slang and youth language) that sometimes exhibit different tendencies than the standard language. In this mini course, you will become more familiar with these different forms of non-standard German, and come to an understanding that they, too, appear to show several specific tendencies.
Lecture and Demonstration: “Medieval Germanic Music and Musical Instruments”
Taught, in English, by Dr. Sharon Wailes
Have you ever heard of a lute, a psaltery, a serpent, or aa sackbut? Come learn about the instruments people played in medieval Germany and in Viking-Age Scandinavia. You will not only hear about the instruments but also see and hear them demonstrated live! At the end you will be invited to try some of the instruments if you wish.

Culture Class: “Turkish-German Literature and Culture”
Taught, in English, by graduate student Duncan Lien
Döner, a food with roots in Anatolia, is now a central feature of the German culinary landscape. Sadly, you will not taste döner in this course, but it will offer an overview of the social, historical, and cultural changes which explain the journey of this food from the streets of Ottoman Empire to Imbissen across German-speaking countries and beyond. Alongside a brief overview of the history of Turkish-German encounters from the time of the Ottoman Empire to present, we will examine examples of multilingual Turkish-German culture in the past decades, looking at examples of multilingualism in Turkish-German literature and music.
Kaffeeklatsch
Hosted by graduate student Anna Piotti
A space where High School students can get together with PSU undergraduate and graduate students to talk about life at Penn State, the transition from High School to College, German classes at Penn State, and really anything the students would like to talk about.
