Hello Class, I’m running a bit behind on the first week of classes, wow, this new semester really snuck up on me. I hope you are well.
Happy 2017.
My name is Lourdes, and this picture is of my family. My daughter Ava is my very favorite thing in my life.
I live in Northern, New Jersey and I am an Organizational Leadership major.
I work for a major Japanese Pharmaceutical Daiichi Sankyo, in the marketing department. I love my job, and I consider myself very lucky to have gotten this job a few years ago. I keep learning something new in it every day.
I am actually getting my degree because the company offered tuition reimbursement. But also because I wanted to open more doors to move within the company. I am definitely thinking of getting the IT certification that can be added to this degree because I love playing around with computers and software. Also, have you seen how much IT people get paid? There’s really great potential for financial growth there.
To be honest, if I could get paid to be a student I would do it without hesitation. I think learning is one of the necessities of life. Your brain is just starving to learn new things.
I am an Aquarius, Yes I know, roll your eyes. But I am a jack of all trades, mistress of none. So my long term goals right now are to complete this degree, and then figure out the rest from there. I really would love to own my own business, but for now, I am happy where I am, and raising my daughter is really a full time job, on top of the full time job I already have, on top of the full time job qualities of getting this degree. I work on a cycle of 3 year goals, and getting this degree is still within that cycle. So that’s where I will focus my discipline.
I do have some leadership skills in several areas, but I wouldn’t call myself an expert leader; I have lead special projects at work, and have been the producer on a few off[Broadway plays (mostly by my award winning playwright brother!) But I don’t do that much anymore because raising my daughter has become a priority.
One of my favorite quotes is —
“You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.” Shirley Chisholm
This is one of the many amazing quotes from one of my heroes Shirley Chisholm. Mrs. Chisholm was the first African American Congresswoman and had a revolutionary run for the presidency of the United States in 1972. But having picked up one of her books for my Women and Leadership class from last semester, I grew to love her straight on, tell it like it is style and her ideas about citizenship are rooted on the six pillars of character; which I find very inspiring.
I am a little intimidated by the syllabus of this class. But I feel the fear and do it anyway. Have a great semester I look forward to sharing this class with all of you.

It is great to have you in the class Lourdes. I very much agree with the life-long/continuous learning perspective. There are many days I wish I could go back and be a full-time student. I look forward to working with you.
