Introduction

Hi class,

My name is Jessica K. I am Editor of the Pennsylvania State World Campus Psychology Club’s newsletter called Mind over Matters. Here, I encourage students of all majors to write about psychology-related topics. I was able to bring back the newsletter from a two-year hiatus. If you would like to read a previous issue, please click here. Also if you are interested in possibly becoming a writer, please email me separately. I have a great love for neuroscience, psychology, nature, writing, research, and anything art-related. OLEAD 410 Introduction

Hello Classmates,

My name is Kiambe Hilliard and I am majoring in Organizational Leadership. My grade level is upperclassmen and currently living in Los Angeles, California. I currently work for a healthcare organization called Kaiser Permanente, within their National Operations and Informatics team as a Lead IT Consultant.  Some of my interest include: acting, writing, hiking, running, and night out with friends. The most interesting thing about me is that I’m an identical twin. He currently lives in New York City. No, we’ve never played tricks with our friends our teachers. We’ve always tried to establish our own identities, but it never worked out entirely. We are naturally synchronized and end up behaving and doing the same thing.  Lastly, my goal for this course is to explore the minds of various leaders across the globe. Having verse knowledge and reading different theories/practices from various leaders will help me as a future leader. I know I’m destine to face challenges which will require strong leadership skills. In most companies, you work with individuals from around the globe. There will be several cultural differences and approaches to completing complex tasks to support one team mission. Thanks for your time and look forward to meeting/collaborating with you all.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Sarah Sheridan. I live in south New Jersey right near Philadelphia. My major is Labor Employment Relations and this is my last semester as a full-time student. With six course remaining I am taking five this semester and my final course in the summer. I am taking this course because it generally interests. I also work as a full-time Human Resources Generalist and I plan get my SHRM cert next winter.

I am crazy plant lady with over 70 house plants. In a very small house that sits on a little over an acre. Most of it my fiancé and I grow vegetables on. The list of what we don’t grow is shorter. We also have two bee hives. Once I finish school we will expand by adding some chickens! I also enjoy spinning, yoga, and running. Due to my time constraints with school I finally joined the Peloton community and got the bike. During the semester I do all my readings on the bike! I also enjoy cooking; about once a week we make homemade pasta.

Hello everyone,

My name is Erik and I am a full-time student and military spouse. I grew up in Michigan and met my wife in Ohio while I was visiting a friend for their birthday. We now live in Idaho currently but that will be changing very soon as her job requires that we move every two years. Luckily for me, I love traveling and seeing different parts of the world. In the United States alone I’ve visited probably twenty or so states. Outside of the U.S. I have been to Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Malta, France, and England.

This will be my third semester with Penn State now, I was a part time student a while back at Akron University but once we moved from Ohio I needed a stable place to go to school while on the move. I look forward to learning about leadership on a much larger scale and getting to know you all along the way.

Hi Class,

My name is Anna Merhazion. I live in State College PA and this will be my second semester at World Campus. I am seeking out to get my B.S in Labor Employment Relations. In doing so, I am hoping that this class will elevate my understanding of leadership, global organizational structure, and cultural difference around the world.

When I am not studying, I am working. I work at the Bryce Jordan Center here at the University Park. For those who may not know of the Bryce Jordan Center, it is the 3rd biggest sports venue in PA. We have the biggest space that holds almost 15,000 people at a time here at Penn State, this is why commencement, graduation, sporting events, concerts and of course THON is held here. It’s a lot of fun working in this industry of sports venue and event planning. What’s rewarding is being able to work many different people of all over the states, and meeting new patrons from all over the country.
Besides school and work, I have 3 kids. They also keep me super busy with school and activities. We all enjoy going to the beach, particularly the Florida beaches so we can not wait for the warmer months to come.

Hello,

My name is Heidi and I am a single mom.  I have an almost 10-year-old that is on the Autism Spectrum, which finds us at State College every year in August for a conference, well at least the past 4 years.  I currently reside near Pittsburgh, PA and have all of my life.  I am hoping to complete my degree at the end of this semester as long as all goes as planned.

I currently work at a local bank, but just recently have considered a venture into something completely different.  I am looking forward to this semester as the classes that I am enrolled in this semester.  I am a music lover and I enjoy everything about local music and everything that goes along with it.  I look forward to working with everyone this semester.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Alexis Williams, I am originally from New York; however, I currently reside in the beautiful Emerald Coast of Florida. I am a mother of two boys, 10 and 19 years old. If all goes according to plan, I plan on completing my degree by the end of this year (fingers crossed).

I am a government contractor supporting various government contracts throughout the branches concentrating on national security and defense, space systems and commercial solutions. I am perusing a degree in Organizational Leadership and Management, in hopes of pursuing different avenues within my organization.

I do travel often for my work which allows me to experience various places and cultures, but truthfully my hobbies consist of whatever my sons are actively engaged in I.e. baseball, ju-jitsu, gaming etc. However, I do enjoy a good podcast or audio book.

I look forward to working with all of you this semester.

Hello everyone,

My name is Katherine Salas Burke, but I go by Kathy. I am a native Texan and currently live in a suburb that is 30 miles northwest of Dallas. This semester is my third at Penn State World Campus, and if all goes as planned, I will graduate at the end of the summer semester this year. I’m a mother of two, a 22-year-old son, also in college, and a seven-year-old daughter in second grade. Quite the gap, I know. I’m married to a Sr. Art Director in the video game business, of which I met while working at Atari.

I resigned from my job as a Managing Director in the recruiting industry about a year ago, where I was employed for the last 15 years. I did so after deciding to return to school and finish an undergraduate degree. My career interests and aspirations have been all over the place. I graduated from a Business Magnet High School, which prompted my career in Human Resources and eventually in recruiting; however, I’ve always had a love for science and, more specifically, geology and paleontology because dinosaurs are cool.

I was close to completing a degree in Geoscience from the University of Texas at Dallas over 15 years ago but, unfortunate family medical issues that required my full attention aside from a full-time job made it difficult, if not impossible, to complete at the time. I was fortunate to have been selected for a paleontology internship with Florissant Fossil Beds in Colorado, which is the only other place I’ve ever lived. My hobbies include learning about almost anything, especially about things that start with “Did you know…?”, reading, dabbling in polymer clay sculpting, and hunting for fossils or cool rocks, minerals, and crystals are how I spend my time usually.

I look forward to working with everyone and learning from Dr. Redmond.

Welcome to the class everyone.

This is sample post to help ease your concerns about posting here. Basically you can’t mess up the technology, so please hit the “+ New” button towards the top of the page and post your test blog entry (this one doesn’t count towards your final tally of blog entries). Then feel free to comment on your classmates’ entries as a test of that as well as you will need to make comments throughout the course as well.

For your actually posts for the semester (You’ll need to complete 4 entries and also 4 comments) you will need to directly apply a course concept or two to something relevant to a topic we are discussing in class such as a specific country or region or skill or competency.

This is a slightly less formal assignment, and it should also be fun. But remember that it is a class assignment, so you will need to demonstrate your learning by applying a course concept by explaining the idea and using it to analyze your example or idea (and citing and referencing), it shouldn’t just be a personal journal.

As for who I am, my name is Brian Redmond, and I’ll be your instructor for the semester. I’m from a lot of places. I was born in Upstate New York near the Canadian border, but spent most of my early life in Vermont. I went to New York City for graduate school and lived both there and in New Jersey. I spent a year back in Upstate New York before moving to Arizona for my first full-time teaching job. From there I moved to Pennsylvania back in 2008 to work here at Penn State. I work for the World Campus because I love online education. I’ve been teaching online since 2004 and made the switch to full-time online faculty in 2008, so I’ve worked with a lot of great students from all over the world in the over 100 sections I’ve now taught. For hobbies, I am a sci-fi fan and baseball fan. All sorts of baseball. It is a family tradition to go to the Little League World Series at least once each year. We also try to go to several minor league games each year and we are lucky enough that the State College Spikes play here in town.

I look forward to working with you all and having a very productive semester.
