Hello Class,
One thing that stood out to me in this week’s chapter is Europe’s education system. I wanted to personally share my experience of going to school in Turkey and compare the differences between the United States education systems. According to our book, “Educational systems in Europe tend to be very traditional, somewhat rigid in offerings and organization, and resistant to change. While strong in science, engineering, literature, languages, courses in business, management, and entrepreneurship were only recently and slowly introduced.” (Moran, Abramson, & Moran, 2014). I have noticed a pattern with many people that are educated overseas and that is they are more advanced than us Americans when it comes to science and mathematics. Why they are more advanced is because what we learn in the 9-12th grade is what they already learned in the 6-8th grade. Also, us American were allowed to use calculators to help solve our problems, however, in European countries, you’re to figure out your mathematical equation manually including on exams.
I also agree that Europe has a better Education system because they offer many scholarships and make education affordable for students. The great thing also is that many schools offer free education. The 2020 Best Countries for Education is based upon a global survey that includes a combination of scores the help determine countries that provide an excellent education. Currently, “United Kingdom is number one for their education system” (n.d.). The great thing about the United Kingdom for us Americans is that even though there are many dialects the native language is English, therefore, communication would never be an issue.
According to The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, “The United Kingdom is the leading destination for international students. UK universities are among the best in the world and consistently perform well in world rankings. They also have a reputation for world-class research.UK higher education degrees and qualifications are recognized by employers and academics worldwide. Students get the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge, critical thinking, and connections to drive forward their careers. UK courses are generally shorter than other countries, helping to reduce overall tuition fees and accommodation costs. (n.d.). Although this just mentions universities as a whole European education teaches students to challenge themselves mentally and physically. They are always being held to the highest standard and endure a lot of competition throughout their school years. As these countries are investing in providing high quality higher education and help students comfortably afford to attend school is a great way of getting more people educated also.
Lastly, going to school overseas myself I learned the differences between the teaching techniques. During middle school in Turkey, they used rote learning, “Rote learning is defined as the memorization of information based on repetition. The two best examples of rote learning are the alphabet and numbers. Slightly more complicated examples include multiplication tables and spelling words. At the high-school level, scientific elements and their chemical numbers must be memorized by rote.” (2018). In my literature class, my teacher would have me memorize multiple poems, in my science class my teacher would ensure the chart of the chemical elements was burned in our brain and would do pop quizzes on what each symbol meant. When I was first introduced to this learning it was very hard for me to grasp because I never had to read something so repetitively until it burned in my brain. With the mixture of repetition and memorization, it allows you to be more confident and stimulates you to learn newer things.
