This year, Penn State Global participates in its annual GivingTuesday with two funds: We are all Penn State (International Student Emergency) Fund and Penn State Study Abroad Scholarship Fund.

Yesterday marked the start for early giving leading up to the official Giving Tuesday on November 30th. Starting yesterday, November 15, early donors could make contributions to the Penn State Global Fund for international student emergencies and the Penn State Study Abroad Scholarship Fund by visiting https://give.communityfunded.com/o/annual-giving/i/givingtuesday/s/penn-state-global.

New this year, there are following incentives for your donation:

  • Thanks to the generous support of two anonymous donors, all gifts made on GivingTuesday to either of the Penn State Global funds will be matched dollar for dollar up to a total of $2,000 ($1,000 from each donor).
  • Alumni who make a first-time gift to the University through a contribution of at least $25 to a GivingTuesday campaign will have their gift boosted with an extra $25 from the Peter Weiler Family Endowment in Advancement and Philanthropy.
  • And returning this year is the opportunity for our Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) to make their generosity go even further. GOLD gifts of $5 or more to any #GivingTuesday campaign will be matched dollar for dollar by Penn State up to $100.
  • Two other anonymous donors are willing to provide a matching contribution based on social media likes and shares. Please like our posts and use #TogetherWeAre to join the conversation! Attached is our flyer.
    • One individual pledges $1 for every like and share on the Education Abroad accounts’ social media posts that announce our GivingTuesday campaign and contain the link (up to $250 total to the Penn State Study Abroad Scholarship Fund).

Testimonies from our global alumni

One reason I’m proud to be part of the Penn State community is our extensive network and our support for each other. There is always that feeling of joy when you see another person rocking Penn State souvenir no matter where they are in the world. Similarly, this support materializes through the form of financial giving. As a former international student, I know how difficult it can be being in a foreign country, away from family, trying to keep up grades as well as trying to make a new home with new friends. Life gets even more complicated when financial hardships and emergencies occur because your usual support network is far away. This is the reality of so many international students and Penn State Global’s fund is a way to alleviate some of that stress on students. With every donation you make to the fund, you are showing that the Nittany Lion support is always strong. That WE ARE there to help when one of us is in need. Every donation goes a long way to making a student’s college experience better despite the ups and downs that may occur.

Penn State has the largest alumni network in the world. Based on recent research, Penn State helps build the most Fortune 500 CEO’s (more than any other school). Penn State values each and every student, and treats them with respect, as part of the community and is always in seek of new knowledge and understanding. When Penn State opens its doors to International Students, it opens the possibilities for so much more. Fresh perspectives, different backgrounds, more knowledge, different points of view.
GivingTuesday is a way to help Penn State keep building its large global network; it’s a way to foster community building, discovery of new knowledge and understanding, foster creativity and innovation. GivingTuesday is a way that our alumn can help one student to achieve more, innovate more, be more for ourselves, for our communities, and for our society.
Rafael Fulton Fernandes, a Penn State alumnus

International students come all the way to Penn State with an aspiration to become what seems impossible back home. I didn’t know that I could travel to South Africa and attend an international conference in community psychology, without the education abroad travel fund from Penn State. Being there has impacted my career and network until now as a researcher and aspiring community psychologist, in many ways. I would imagine many other students would benefit from such funds, especially in uncertain times like now. We never know what a student can contribute later to the society for who they become, but we know that our support today will unlock whatever struggle they are facing now.

I would encourage donors and alumni to support our students in Global Education Abroad Scholarships. Studying abroad can be expensive and can discourage people from participating in programs. More scholarships and funding would encourage more students to partake in these amazing opportunities. Studying abroad opens a whole new world of opportunities. It looks great on your resume and allows for so much new experiences.
Claire Jablonski, a Penn State returned studying abroad student

I understand that we may all have our situations in life, through your willingness to give will, without a doubt, impact this world. Your investment will reach areas you wouldn’t think it could ever reach. Your help is beyond education, it is life changing. It is important for today. It is important for tomorrow. It is important for those who are present here, for those who are putting in the work, and those who aim higher than today’s limitations.
