Welcome to The Green Fox

The name “Green Fox” originates from a man called James Phillips. Although he spent his career as a middle school teacher in Chicago, Phillips was also an environmental activist who became well known during the 1960s operating under the pseudonym, The Fox.

James Phillips’ first effort of activism was plugging sewage pipes after they released pollutants that killed ducks in the Fox River. Over the years, his creative and unique forms of activism included erecting signs criticizing US Steel, placing caps on top of smoke stacks, leaving skunks on the doorsteps of owners polluting companies, and, in one instance, taking 50 pounds of sewage from Lake Michigan into the reception room of the company that had discharged it.

Phillips’ inspiring displays of activism and support resulted in several successful boycotts and the suing of Armour Dial, a company that violated Illinois’ pollution standards.

The Green Fox aims to replicate James Phillips’ passion for the environment through educating others on the importance of sustainability. Our goal as writers is to communicate to the public just how impactful stories can be, and we hope to inspire future writers and environmental activists with our work!
