*Microbial Ecologist position at F&M
*Microbial Ecologist position at F&M
Monday, 01 July 2024
F&M is hiring a tenure-track position in Microbial Ecology and I wanted to pass along the job ad: https://apply.interfolio.com/148570
As a Penn State alum, I would be happy to talk to any late-stage grad students or post-docs about teaching and doing research at a small liberal arts college. I would selfishly love a colleague who also studies microbial eukaryotes 🙂
Hope all is well in State College!!

*Postdoc positions in the DeGiorgio group
*Postdoc positions in the DeGiorgio group
Monday, 15 July 2024
Dear colleagues,
I am looking to hire a couple postdocs to work on two grant funded projects.
Ideally, the postdoc candidates would have either background in evolutionary genomics with an interest in learning method development, or a background in statistics or machine learning with an interest in developing methods for evolutionary genomics.
If you know of graduate students or postdocs who fit this profile and who are looking for postdoc positions, then please forward them the following advertisement.
The DeGiorgio group (http://degiorgiogroup.fau.edu/), at Florida Atlantic University, is seeking to hire postdoctoral scholars to work on projects supported by NIH and NSF-NERC grants.
The NIH project would focus on developing statistical, machine learning, and signal processing methods to learn about natural selection from population genomic data.
The NSF-NERC project is in collaboration with Matteo Fumagalli at Queen Mary University of London (https://mfumagalli.github.io/) and would focus on designing deep learning methods for detecting and characterizing balancing selection from nonmodal study systems.
The position will offer a competitive salary, and the university is situated in the beautiful coastal city of Boca Raton, FL.
Informal inquiries are welcome by contacting Michael DeGiorgio directly at mdegiorg@fau.edu.
To apply, please submit a cover letter and CV at https://fau.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/FAU/job/Postdoctoral-Scholar_REQ18364.
Best,
Mike

Sign up for Ask A Scientist at the Grange Fair
Sign up for Ask A Scientist at the Grange Fair
Monday, 22 July 2024
Hello!
I hope all is well and that you are enjoying the summer! The Office of Science Outreach is busy conducting Science-U camps this month, but we want to take some time to invite you to participate in our annual Ask A Scientist outreach event next month at the Centre County Grange Fair! You are receiving this email due to your past participation or potential interest. Details are below.
Date: Friday, August 23, 2024 Time: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (with set-up starting at 10:00 a.m.) Where: The Rec Building at the Centre County Grange Fairgrounds (149 Homan Lane, Centre Hall, PA) about 20 minutes from University Park. This structure is a bit rustic with electricity for fans and a roof, but no air conditioning or reliable Wi-Fi.
What: Outreach tabling event for Penn State faculty, staff, and students to present science activities and demonstrations to small groups for about 5-10 minutes. Audience: Attendees are families visiting or camping at the Grange Fair, with a majority being elementary-age children. Examples of successful presentations include engaging guests with laboratory or scientific tools/techniques, science-based crafts, or short demonstrations. Presenters: We are looking for several groups - laboratories, student orgs, etc.- to join us! It works best to have 4-6 presenters per group to give each other some breaks and time for lunch. Because this is a public event, background clearances are appreciated but not required.
Why: This annual event is a highlight of the Grange Fair Encampment week! It is fun and an excellent opportunity for Penn State scientists to communicate and humanize their research topic or their love of science with a primarily rural audience. Cost: None; we will make sure you have tickets to enter the fairgrounds. However, your group may need to spend funds on supplies, travel, and lunch. Sign-up: Please use this quick form to express your interest and sign-up for the event by August 15, or copy and paste this link into your browser: https://forms.office.com/r/utt8DswEe5
Please note: Without permission from the Office of Science Outreach, or our Grange Fair contact person, the Grange Fair advertising committee changed the name of the event this year! You may see on the Fair's website schedule and brochure that the event is listed as "Mad Science" with PSU Science Students. We have expressed our disappointment in this name change for several reasons, and our contact person has offered multiple apologies. We also have been told that the original name, Ask a Scientist, will be used during the Fair, but it cannot be changed back in the marketing materials. Although the name change was probably done in a spirit of fun, and with the intent of drawing a bigger crowd, we feel that it also emphasizes a continued need to make science and scientists accessible and approachable to the general public. We hope you will be willing to join us in this effort next month!
Questions: Please reply to this email. I would be happy to meet with you on campus, Teams, or Zoom as well. We also encourage you to forward the information and sign-up form to others who may be interested in participating.
Thank you, and we look forward to working with you!
Sincerely, Carol-Beth on behalf of the Office of Science Outreach
