Policy:
The Penn State Physical Therapist Assistant program is committed to rights and privileges of persons associated with the educational program in regards to informed consent.
Procedure:
- Students are informed of possible criminal background checks, FBI finger printing, child abuse screens and drug testing officially during New Student Orientation and PTA Orientation. This information is available on the website for students who may be interested in applying to the program. This policy is available in the PTA Handbook available to future and current students.
- The students are informed of their expectations in laboratory and clinical experiences through the Informed Consent and Assumption of Risk and Release Form.
- Faculty will review this policy at the start of each course that has a lab component and explain the implications of the form and have them sign the document and witness their signature.
- Student are reminded that it is their obligation to notify that faculty member if they have any contraindications that would prohibit them in participating in the laboratory experience.
- Students also are required to sign an Authorization to Release Demographic Information and a Medical and Personal History Acknowledgement Forms for release of written or multimedia personal/demographic information or medical information.
- Students are also recommended to obtain Hepatitis B vaccination. The students are informed of the risks and benefits associated with the vaccine and sign a waiver if the student chooses not to get the vaccine.
- Students are required by the clinical sites to receive a two-step PPD for Tuberculosis.
- All students, faculty and staff are informed of the Policy and Procedure for MSDS at the time of initial employment or admission into the program.
- Students are required to inform patients that they are a student PTA and ask permission to treat the patient. Students are required to demonstrate competency by identifying themselves on every practical exam.
