Remediation Policy:
Subject: Remediation Policy
Effective Date: June 3, 2023
Required Elements: ?
Purpose:
Describe the process and delivery of remediation for improved student skills and knowledge in preparing for a second attempt at a written and practical exam.
Practical Examinations:
- A student can only repeat the practical one time once they complete all the steps of this policy.
- The faculty member notifies the student that they failed to pass the practical exam.
- Before sitting down with the student, the faculty member will send the student a copy of their video and a Practical Exam Assessment Form so that the student can grade their performance.
- The instructor will prompt students to reflect on their preparation and performance, and they must identify necessary changes to prepare for a successful retake.
- To ensure effective learning, students must watch the video and utilize the grading sheet to identify their strengths and weaknesses within three days of the practical.
- Students must complete the Practical Exam Assessment Form within three days of notification of failing their practical. The student must then contact the faculty member, who will set the time and date for a meeting to review the practical exam and discuss steps for remediation.
- The student can discuss any concerns or barriers to success during the remediation meeting. Faculty can discuss behaviors in the classroom or lab that have a negative impact on the student’s performance. For example, the student may always be on their phone during class.
- At the faculty member’s discretion, they will determine a date and a time for the retake of the practical exam. Then, the faculty member will review the retake policy so the student understands it could affect their progression through the program and graduation.
Written Examinations:
- The student will have one opportunity to repeat a written examination within a course if their score is 74% or below on the assessment.
- The student has one day after grades are posted to notify the instructor if they wish to retake the exam. The retake cannot occur after the exam has been returned and reviewed with the class.
- The instructor will only allow students to see the exam once all the retake exams are completed.
- Upon notification from the student, the instructor will schedule a time for remediation. The re-examination will be within one week. For example, if the test was completed on a Monday, re-examination must be done by the following Monday.
- The highest grade a student will receive on retaking the written examination is 75%.
- If the second grade is higher but below 75%, the student will receive the higher of the two grades.
- If the second grade is lower on the second attempt, the student will receive the highest of the two grades.
