- Join the Council of Sustainable Leaders online Friday, March 25th, at Noon EST for their fifth Sustainability Showcase of the semester in partnership with the Penn State Center for Performing Arts and their upcoming live performance of Small Island Big Song on Thursday, April 7th.Our speakers will be Small Island Big Song Producer BaoBao Chen and Australian music producer and filmmaker Tim Cole who in 2015 have been recording and filming with over a hundred musicians in nature across 16 island nations of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, a region at the frontline of the Climate Crisis.Their talk will be a discussion about creating a relevant musical statement representing 16 island nations of the Pacific and Indian Oceans that are on the frontline of cultural and environmental challenges.

- We will be joined by Zhiwa Woodbury, a panpsychologist and long-time advocate for all things natural and wild. His talk, entitled “Becoming Indigenous to Earth: Enlisting Gaia as our Ally in the Climate Crisis,” will focus on issues of climate grief and how we can reshape our psychological approach to climate change.

- The Spring 2022 Expo serves as a way of showcasing the power of the arts to evoke emotion and convey the complexity and intersectionality of the issues that make up the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Inspired by the multimedia performance, Small Island Big Song, which will be presented by the Center for the Performing Arts on April 7th, this year’s expo will focus on the themes explored in their performance. More specifically, we are inviting students to create work that unpacks issues around climate refugees, Indigenous knowledge, ocean conservation, water rights, and other related social justice issues.

- Get an opportunity to jam with the Small Island Big Song members at 3Dots downtown! We will be doing a trash to music workshop from 5-6:30, so if you want to make some drums out of some old cans you can join us for that! Then from 6:30-8:00 the artist from Small Island Big Song will be showcasing their music alongside students from the School of Music here at Penn State.

- This two-hour panel discussion, featuring artists from Small Island Big Song, is offered as part of IllumiNATION’S month of art and sustainability events focused on ocean conservation, indigenous voices, and water rights. Richard Alley, Evan Pugh University Professor of Geosciences at Penn State, will moderate.

- We will be joined by writer and poet Craig Santos Perez who is an indigenous Chamoru (Chamorro) from the Pacific Island of Guåhan (Guam). His eco-poetry rooted in his experience as a Pacific Islander will be on issues of climate change and the Pacific raised in an earlier Sustainability Showcase on March 25 and in our film screening on April 20 and in the Center for Performing Arts’ Small Island, Big Song performance on April 7.
