Please join your friends, colleagues, and new IME Graduate Students for a Welcome Back Luncheon in the lobby of the Leonhard Building at noon. The event is being catered by Jimmy Johns with enough sub sandwiches. Please notify us if you have any food allergens / restrictions and we will do our best to work with you. This luncheon will be a great opportunity to catch up with returning students, meet new IME Graduate Students, and hear the events that the Officer Board has been crafting for the upcoming semester.

INFORMS Presents: From PhD to Industry, a panel talk
On November 19th 2020 was held a panel talk organized by INFORMS at Penn State titled : “INFORMS Presents: From PhD to Industry”.
During that Zoom session, Dr. Ning Liu, Dr. Xuan Zheng, and PhD candidate Adam Meyers gave their impressions on the process of transitioning from PhD to working full time in industry. They answered questions about their motivations, about useful skills, and briefly described the work they do and a typical day at work. They also provided valuable insights and advice that can help students successfully enter industry.

Congratulations to INFORMS at Penn State Student Chapter for winning the 2020 Student Chapter Annual Awards-Magna cum laude. This award recognizes the great achievements of student chapters. The Chapters/Fora Committee base their evaluation on the Annual Student Chapter Activity Report that includes the following criteria: Communications, Special Events & Initiatives, Community Service and Chapter Operations.
Webinar: How To Find An Academic Job
INFORMS at Penn State Student Chapter held a webinar ‘How To Find An Academic Job’ on July 22.
Our guest speaker, Afrooz Jalilzadeh, who graduated from the Department of Industrial Engineering this summer, will start her career at the University of Arizona this Fall at the Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering as a tenure-track assistant professor.
Afrooz shared her experience in finding academic job from various perspectives following the time line of the application including preparing the application documents, early conference interview, campus interview.

Great session of the introduction to the career in data science
INFORMS at Penn State held an event to introduce the career in data science to INFORMS members and IE students on Dec. 3. It was a great success and INFORMS at Penn State appreciate its guest speaker’s presentation.
The guest speaker, Mihir Mehta, currently a Ph.D. student majoring in IE, has numerous professional experience in data science, who worked as a senior data scientist for 84.51 and Oriental Trading Company and also worked as a business analyst for Credit Suisse in India.
Mihir mainly introduced various types of data scientists in industry such as statistics focused, business analytics focused and process design focused. To illustrate the difference among these roles, Mihir used several real world examples to help the audience gain more insights.
Further, he addressed the new trend in the collaboration of all these types of roles in one team.
After the presentation, the audience have a lot of discussion with the speaker to get more knowledge about the career in data science.
