Since photography is all about the recording of light, one of the most important topics in digital photography is lighting. How light falls on a subject, its intensity, its direction, its color and hue all have a major impact on a photo.
In general there are two types of lighting, 1. natural lighting or lighting that is in the environment of the subject, this includes sunlight outdoors and lamps indoors, 2. flash lighting or specific supplemental light triggered to the timing of the photo to provide a burst of light to illuminate the subject. Often these two types of lighting are combined such as fill flash which can be used to illuminate a subject’s face if their face is in shadow in an outdoor picture. Note the pictures below without and then with fill flash.
There is much more to lighting including 7 fundamentals: exposure, quality, color, direction, highlights, shadows, and contrast. All are explained here http://www.pinkbike.com/news/basic-light-tutorial-2011.html Please read.
