The show that paved the way to a new view on the LGBT community on TV

Before the shows like “The L Word” or “Modern Family” there was “Queer as Folk”

December of 2000 marked the beginning of a series that would break barriers in the depiction of the LGBT community on TV.

From 2000-2005 the hit show “Queer as Folk” aired on Showtime every Sunday night at 10:00pm.  “Queer as Folk” portrayed the lives of gay men (and a few women) in a way no other TV show had before.  This was not a half hour sitcom prime time television show that would have their “token” gay character, but a show that addressed many issues that members of the LGTB community had to deal with in the beginning of the 21st century.  This show helped bring awareness to these issues by creating a show that made you fall in love with the characters.  At least that is what this show did form me as a ally for all member of the LGTB community. I found the show at first entertaining and I fell in love with everyone of the characters because they were all unique and inspirational in there own way.  I then started to feel outraged by the many unjust issues these characters had to experience because I was beginning to realize that these were real problems that LGTB people really had to face everyday.

I have created this page because I want viewers to get an overview of how powerful the series “Queer as Folk” was because of the excellent cast that made up the show.  Not only were the characters on the show unique and inspirational each in themselves, but also the actors and actresses that made up the cast were extremely diverse.  Below are the main characters of the show along with the actors or actresses that portrayed them. If you click on the actor’s name on the left it will take you to the website http://www.imdb.com and a bio of the actor or actress. If you click on the character’s name on the right it will take you to http://www.wikia.com. This website gives you a great overview of each character along with some of the controversial issues that character had to deal with in the show.  I think this information is important so viewers can really get a good idea what this show was about and how amazing the cast was.
