Aggressively Average – North in Review

For this week’s edition of my passion blog I went on an adventure. I was in uncharted territory on this campus. A place that many students know little about, and those who do know are slightly ashamed to say that they do know. This place is none other than North Campus.

I’m only up at North Campus to visit my friend who lives in the houses just off of campus, but, previous to this most recent trip, I have never tried North’s food. But this past Monday I made the hike without my friends in mind- I did it for you- my blog family.

I recently joined a club that meets in the Business Building, which, if you don’t know, is a LONG ASS WAY away from my dorm (I live in south). The reason that this is important is because my club meets directly across the street from the North Commons from 6-8, so I’m basically forced into eating at North. While I am doing my best to describe where this commons is and how it relates to me, I am almost certain that you still do not know where it is, and honestly why would you? It’s AAALLLLLLLL the way up Shortlidge Road. Literally as far as that baby goes.

Northside Dining

Anyway, let’s get into the food. North Campus has a decent amount of variety. We’ve got everything from Bluespoon Market to the “Deli” to the “Grill” to “Salad” to World Beat. The incredibly exciting and creative names of the different spots to get food are a great representation for their quality and variety. The overall “blandness” of the different places hurts my feelings. Each of the four different places can be rivaled and beaten by at least 2 or 3 other on campus spots to eat.

Let’s take the Bluespoon Market for example. Louie’s, which is by far the inferior market to East’s Market, outdoes the tiny, sad market up in North. When I was last there, I wanted some ice cream. Simple right? The creamery is just down the road, so they must have some flavors right? WRONG. Not only was there NO creamery ice cream, they only had Ben and Jerry’s CHERRY ICE CREAM. I was shook by the audacity of this sad market. They’re bold, I’ll give them that I suppose. Also, it’s not even like their hours are good. The latest the market is ever open is 10:00 p.m., and everyone knows that people only go to the market from 10:00 p.m. to 12: p.m.! At least they had a F’Real machine… WHICH ONLY HAD 2 FLAVORS! As you can tell, I was (and still am) very salty about this market.

Let’s take a look at the Salad place. Just kidding! I hate salad. Not because the taste is bad, but just because I strongly dislike the texture of lettuce. So that’s two places in North that I won’t eat at.

I have, however, eaten at the Grill. Their selection is incredibly small, it’s something like 4 or 5 menu items, one of which is a “Philadelphia” cheesesteak. As some of the OG blog readers, I’m sure you know what happened last time I had a cheesesteak on this campus. YIKES. When I ate here I ordered myself a cheeseburger with onions and chipolte mayo because why not? It was possibly the most forgettable experience I’ve had at the dining halls.

I cannot stress enough that going up to North commons is the biggest waste of time you could ever make, even if you’re literally across the street like I am every week. I would sooner walk to West from East commons to get food then go to North from the Business Building. I guess my title for this blog isn’t even an accurate statement of what I feel, but I was really blanking on a title. Anyway, thank you for reading me as I sounded off on the worst cardinal direction of commons.

Please comment if I’m missing something in North Commons that would change my mind because in all seriousness it’s so annoying being hungry and having to eat absurdly early or late in South because I refuse to eat in North.

  1. I have only eaten at North once, and that was at the beginning of last semester. My friends and I went to the buffet since they had kimchi that night, but there was nothing incredibly special about the food there. I haven’t tried the other places in North that you mentioned, and based on what you said, it doesn’t seem like I ever will! Thanks for steering me away from the disaster that is North Commons.
