Think back to the last time you crossed your eyes. How did you see? What was your depth perception like? Now, imagine navigating through your entire life in that state. Glasses are a now normal aspect of modern life, at least in the United States, but before efficient manufacturing, the common person’s ability to participate in academia, nature, and simply the world around them was limited by the ability to see. Glasses once served as a barrier between social classes, but they’ve since transitioned into a fashion statement and a means for people to engage with society. Seeing, and therefore reading, is vital to going to school, driving, getting a job, voting, and other “civic”, everyday tasks we might take for granted.
