Hello everyone! My name is Matthew Carrigan and I am the President of the We Are Campaign here at Penn State. I have been exposed to service for as long as I can remember. I have attended Catholic School since preschool, and in my later years, was always required to do service. My very first service opportunity was at my Catholic Church’s Food Bank and I thoroughly enjoyed it! When first told that I had to do service, it always seemed like a job instead of an opportunity. While engaging in the many service opportunities that my community had to offer me, I realized that performing service offered me a chance to give back to the community that helped raise me to be the person I am today.
I complete service because, as I have found throughout many years, I love the feeling of drastically improving one’s day. Whether the service project is small or large, it dramatically brightens a person’s day. That is why I love the Council of Lionhearts and all of the organizations that are embedded within it; even though we focus on different areas, I believe that we ALL strive for a common goal: to positively impact the lives of our fellow neighbors. Service will always be a significant part of my life and I hope to encourage people to share that feeling with me in my many more years of service.
