Penn State Career Pathways and Family Pathways offer individualized educational and workforce preparation services for adult learners, families, and out of school youth.

Career Pathways

Programs and Services for Adult Learners

Adult Basic Education (ABE): Develop basic reading, grammar, writing, math, and technology skill areas based on a standardized assessment.

Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma (GED® or HiSET®): Earn a high school diploma by taking and passing 4 assessments (Math, Reasoning through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies).

English as a Second Language (ESL): Improve basic conversational, writing, civics, and workforce skills.

College and Career Readiness Skills (CCRS): Realize your college and career readiness goals by upgrading your literacy, numeracy, and overall study skills ensuring success in college, technical training programs, and employment.

Case Management: Overcome barriers to instruction and goal attainment by connecting learners to community resources.

Distance Learning: Take classes online via the Distance Learning Project, if eligible learners cannot commit to physically attending classes 2 to 4 times weekly.

Family Pathways

Family Pathways provides adult education, parenting classes, and interactive literacy activities for caregivers and children to families in Lycoming and Centre counties.

Family Pathways services include:

  • Instruction in reading, writing, math, and technology skills
  • Preparation for the Commonwealth Secondary Diploma–GED® or HiSET®
  • Career exploration and employability workshops
  • Preparation for post-secondary classes
  • Parenting classes
  • Fun and educational family activities

Job Description(s):

Literacy Tutor: The Penn State Career and Family Pathways program is currently seeking a part-time (minimum of 4 hours/week) tutor for adult learners focusing on English as a Second Language (ESL) skills or earning their Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma (GED® or HiSET®).  

This position will focus on literacy-centered activities to help learners meet their goals. Requirements include flexibility to work with adult learners’ schedules, enthusiasm to help others learn, and patience as you work with the learners. No teaching or tutoring experience is required, and our staff will work with applicants to provide any training and mentoring they may need. Tutoring materials are available for use. 

Position availability: Remote (fully online), hybrid, or in-person tutoring are options. Applicant should be able to accommodate at least 4 hours/week, including 3 hours/week of tutoring plus approximately one hour/week of preparation time. 

Program hours: flexible, minimum of four hours/week with the option for additional hours 

Site supervisor: Shannon Frey 

Site location: online or as determined by tutor and learner 

 

Family Literacy Aide – The Penn State Career and Family Pathways program is currently seeking a part-time (approximately 12 hours/week) Family Literacy Aide. Family Pathways is an intergenerational program providing four components to learners – adult education, parent education, early childhood education and interactive literacy activities.

This position will focus on engaging children (birth – 3rd grade) learning English and their families in fun, creative, and collaborative literacy-centered activities.

Teaching, early childhood and ESL experience are not required, however, a desire to work with children in a fun and supportive setting is.  Our staff will work with applicant to provide any training and mentoring they may need.

Position Availability:   Applicant should be available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 am – 12:15pm (South Atherton) and on Thursdays from 4:00pm – 6:00pm (Keller Building, Penn State campus). 

Program Hours:  As noted above, with additional remote work as determined at placement.
