What is Nittany Lions Read/Nittany Lions Count?
The Nittany Lions Read/Nittany Lions Count Program is designed to support the development of early reading and math skills of children of the communities surrounding the Penn State while offering Penn State students a chance to gain valuable experience and give back to their community. Nittany Lions Read/Nittany Lions Count places eligible Penn State students in schools, childcare centers, museums and other community non-profit organizations in and around University Park, State College, and the surrounding communities.
Nittany Lions Read/Nittany Lions Count students assist and support the Community Partner’s staff, engage directly with the children, and provide one-on-one and/or small-group instruction for children through eighth grade in qualifying community sites. Penn State students applying for a position with Nittany Lions Read/Nittany Lions Count select a Community Partner that best fits their interests, qualifications, location and availability. Mentors work to support the children’s development of the core competencies related to early literacy, mathematics, and science skills.
