Step Out with Madden

A famous quote by Marilyn Monroe states, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.” One of my favorite parts of fashion is shoes. I just adore shoes. Flats, heels, wedges, or boots I can always find a pair of shoes that I like when I am out shopping. A very popular brand of stylish shoes is Steve Madden. Steve Madden carries various types of shoes in all different colors and styles. I can always find a cute pair of Steve Madden’s in various stores such as Macy’s, Famous Footwear, and Bloomingdale’s.
Steve Madden is originally from New York and is known for being “America’s most successful shoe designer.” His business was founded in 1990. With $1,100, Madden started selling shoes from the trunk of his car. After expanding the business into 100 retail stores across the country, Madden’s shoes became sensational. In 2012, the company is said to have brought in $1.23 billion in revenue. However, the road before these sales was “not so golden” for Madden. In 2002, Madden was sentenced to 41 months in prison due to fraud and had to resign as CEO of his company. Released from prison in 2005, Steve Madden got back on his feet once again.
Even after the fraud issue, the brand has still flourished. More recently it was presented with Footwear News Company of the Year Award in 2011. There are three lines of Steve Madden shoes including Madden Girl, STEVEN by Steve Madden, and Freebird by Steve Madden. I have worn Steve Madden, more specifically Madden Girl shoes for many years now. I always thought they were stylish, chic and in vogue. They also are very comfortable. My roommate loves Steve Madden heels. She states, “They are always classy and beautiful.”

Higher Education

When faced with the choices offered for higher education, I bet many of you first struggled with the decision about whether to attend private or public universities. A university is considered public if it gains funding from the state, and thus the taxpayers, in which it’s located. A private university is one that is funded mainly by the tuition of students and the endowments from generous donors and alumni. Thus, the costs to attend private colleges are usually much higher than public institutions. Both types of schools have value related pros and cons, and it really depends on affordability and the individual’s preference regarding which one is a “better fit” for their lifestyle and personality.
Public universities usually tend to have a larger campus with larger student enrollment than private universities. Private universities usually offer more scholarships and financial aid, which sometimes makes the extremely high cost at least somewhat more palatable. In general, private universities are considered to have smaller class sizes with more instructor to student contact. Some are considered elite, academically challenging, and more exclusive, such as the Ivy League schools. Those who decide to attend may be of the opinion that if they attend a private university, they will have a better chance of obtaining a job with a better starting salary. Public universities have the stereotype of being bigger, less expensive, less difficult to get into to, and more apt for parties and the social scene.
These stereotypes, although very common, are not necessarily true and accurate. According to an article written by Business Insider, public universities are said to be better to attend overall mainly because an individual is getting more “bank for their buck”, essentially more value for their tuition dollar. The only category that private schools “won” in this article was regarding “prestige”, and even then this was claimed to be a “myth” by the authors. However, in all of the other categories that compared private to public schools, public universities won and tied once. The article directs students to “Pursue a graduate degree at a private university, where you will benefit from more academic rigor and more specialized areas of study.”
Another controversial topic is the choice between Ivy League and non-Ivy League colleges and universities. Ivy League schools are known for their prestigious nature and elite scholars. Of course, if a student gets accepted to one, they end up attending mainly for the reason that they can say they went to an Ivy League school. However, is it really worth is? An article written in The American Scholar magazine talks about one individual who realized there are disadvantages to attending an Ivy League School. He stated that his attendance at an Ivy League school made it difficult for him to communicate with others who weren’t like him. He also states that attending an Ivy League gives a false self-worth. On the contrary, an article in Forbes states that a degree from Ivy League school still seems prestigious and to have merit. Out of the top 100 Most Powerful Women, thirty out of the 100 women attended Ivy League schools, which according to this article, is a remarkable number. All in all, the most important choice when making a college decision is where an individual feels he or she fits in and feels most comfortable in the learning environment.

Civic Issue Blog- Higher Education

A very interesting topic that arose among the class during the deliberation unit was in regards to general education requirements. Are these classes important? Do they help students? What should be taught in these classes? How many credits of general education should be required? These are just some of the questions that were posed during the deliberation.
The amount of general education credits required for graduation varies among universities. Penn State students must complete 45 credits of general education credits in order to graduate. However, Michigan State University and Bloomsburg University students do not need to take as many credits in general education courses. When the question arises about general education courses, there are two opposing points of view. Some people think that general education classes are a waste of time and feel they should not have to take classes that do not deal with their major of study. On the other hand, others think that general education courses are very beneficial and enhance their overall education. Those with this point of view feel general education courses help students that are unsure of what they might want to major in find their niche. Some also say that they provide a break from all of one’s major classes.
According to Forbes, this argument can be broadened to a more general statement, specifically, “ Are colleges really teaching students what they need to know for later in life.” According to Forbes, Bill Gates says “colleges have to change.” Gates gives facts saying that “45 percent of students showed no improvement in critical thinking, complex reasoning, or written communication during their first two years of college.” He agrees that general education classes are good but questions what they are really teaching. Gates believes that college should not be the first place where schoolwork becomes rigorous. He also believes that 20-year-old students should not be learning how to write. Gates thinks that it needs to start at an earlier age.
In general, the classes taken in college should be beneficial to a student and their major. In regards to general education classes, they can be very important if they introduce students to their career. Unfortunately as a business major, there are no business related general education courses that I can take. All of my general education classes are different subjects that I may never need or use again in my career.

It’s Time for TOMS

I’m sure almost all of you have seen and/or heard of the shoes named ‘TOMS’. This brand of shoes is famously known for their “one for one” policy. This is where they give a pair of free shoes to a child in need when a person buys one of their products. Their shoes have become really popular in the last few years.
TOMS was founded by a man named Blake Mycoskie in 2006. As a competitor on the reality television show The Amazing Race, Blake visited Argentina with his sister during their race. A few years later, he returned to Argentina for volunteer work and noticed that many of the children were running around the town barefooted. Mycoskie learned that a child not having shoes was a very large problem in Argentina and around the world. He wanted to create and sell a shoe with the purpose of giving a pair to a child in need. He noticed the lightweight, comfortable shoe that was worn by polo players in Argentina. Through his research he found that this type of shoe was first worn by farmers in Argentina and was known as the ‘alpargatas.’ This simple, canvas shoe became the “inspiration” for TOMS. The company began its sales by selling 250 pairs of shoes in May 2006. Following this sale, the company gained press from America and 10,000 pairs were sold in the first 6 months. Today, the company donates shoes to over 40 developing countries. The name of the company “TOMS” came from the word “tomorrow” which is tied to the “Shoes for Tomorrow Project.”
Today, TOMS are very well known due to their comfort, style and most of all, their giving back to children in need. They are made from canvas and other fabrics and come in array of different styles and patterns. I have many pairs of TOMS because they are cute, lightweight, and comfortable. I am very happy to know that when I purchase a pair of TOMS a child in another country is also receiving a pair of shoes.

Keeping it Klassy with Kate Spade

Kate Spade, an American women’s accessory and clothing brand, has become very popular recently especially for young women due to its smart, vibrant, and chic products. It has many accessories that are bright-colored and fun that really catch the eye of any passerby. A woman named Kate Spade started the company in New York City in 1993.
Kate Spade, formerly known as Katy Brosnahan, started working in a boutique in Manhattan named Mademoiselle in 1986. After years of working in the store, Kate became fashion editor and head of accessories. Kate ultimately decided to leave in 1991 to start her own company because she noticed that the brand “lacked stylish and sensible handbags.” In 1993, she started the company named Kate Spade Handbags with a man named Joel Franklin. Although they only started their company with the intention of selling handbags, they soon expanded their company to include other merchandise such as shoes, beauty products, eye wear, and more. In 2004, Kate Spade further expanded her company by selling home goods and named the product line “Kate Spade at Home.” The company opened its first store in 1996 in New York City’s SoHo. Kate Brosnahan dated and then married Andy Spade, brother of the famous actor/comedian David Spade in 1995. Kate used the surname of her future husband for her company even before she was married to Andy.
I became interested in Kate Spade only recently. The brand has become very popular among women in the past few years. The handbags designed by this company are colorful and bright, yet of very high quality. The company always markets their products in the hottest colors for the season. Also, I am a big fan of Kate Spade watches. They are charming and cute. An extremely popular item that I see frequently on campus is the Kate Spade IPhone cases, which are classy and chic. Although most items in this brand can be very pricy, the products are of very high quality, fashionable, and in vogue. I really like Kate Spade products but will need to work overtime to afford this line!

Civic Issue- Higher Education

As we were deliberating over the past few weeks about higher education, it was apparent that many of us had opposing points of view about how scholarships for higher education should be distributed. Some felt strongly that financial need should be the most important factor, while others felt that such monetary need should be secondary to academic merit.
On one hand, it is important to reward students who are performing well in school, as exhibited by their high grade point average, top percentile scores on standardized testing, and balancing their workload successfully while participating in extracurricular activities. Scholarships for such students are a well-deserved reward for their hard work, diligence, and dedication. However, it is also important to provide scholarships for students who perform in an academically sound manner, desire to attend higher education, but cannot do so without financial aid and support. As important as the financial need issue is and as crucial as it is to make sure all academically sound students have a fair chance to attend college, scholarships should not be directed solely for need based candidates.
It is important for society to find a true balance between need and academic based aid in order to help everyone succeed, thus keeping the U.S. as a highly competitive player in the global economy. According to an article written in The Wall Street Journal, more merit scholarships were granted than need based scholarships in the past decade, starting in 2000. However, in 2012, need based scholarships reportedly surpassed merit based scholarships. An article published from NPR notes that large merit scholarships have now become a major issue in higher education. As many colleges and universities are trying to attract the best and brightest students by issuing large merit based scholarships, tuition is ultimately increasing at some institutions without large endowments in order to fund these scholarships. Rising tuition is already one of the major issues confronting higher education. Such large scholarships, such as full tuition for 4 years, should not be adding to the costs for all students if the university doesn’t have the money to solely fund them from an endowment source. Also, another concern regarding the distribution of scholarships is the trend to give out more scholarships to students with interests in math, science, and engineering fields of study. These disciplines are supposedly felt to be the “most important” in keeping the US competitive in the global economy. Although it is crucial to recognize these areas indeed are very important, other gifted students with talents and interests outside of math and science should not be at a disadvantage due to their study of choice.

Positively Preppy

I have never been a huge fan of the trendy, ever so common, but popular clothing brands. One can find students on this campus sporting clothing from these makers, which include Hollister, American Eagle, and Abercrombie and Fitch. However, like any other teen, I went through my stage of wearing some of their clothing, but the style never really fit my personality. One of my favorite brands, and a very popular brand among young women, is J. Crew. I started liking this brand in my early teen years as it offered clothing for girls that were preppy, classy, and sophisticated. The J. Crew brand is well recognized for its cute sweaters, chino shorts, and casual blazers, which are just some of my favorites from this company.
The company J. Crew originally started out in 1947 under the name of Popular Merchandise Inc., selling low priced clothing for women. Mitchell Cinader and Saul Charles were the brand originators, marketing their merchandise initially by in-home demonstrations. They started this company as they recognized there was a high demand and popularity of clothing styles offered by such makers as LL Bean, Talbots, and Lands’ End. They wanted to create clothing that was similar in quality and style to that of the Ralph Lauren line, but with a much less expensive price tag. From the inception of their first catalog, sales increased 25 to 30 percent a year. In the span of five years, sales increased from $3 million to $100 million. In 1989, Popular Merchandise Inc. adopted its current name of J. Crew, and opened its first store in downtown Manhattan.
J. Crew now offers more than just women’s clothing. They have expanded their merchandise line to include men’s clothing as well as children’s clothing. They have also added shoes, jewelry, and accessories. Although the clothing merchandise was designed to be a less expensive version of Ralph Lauren, it is quite pricey unless one purchases the brand in J. Crew factory outlets. Here, one can always find sales and discounts. Nevertheless, it is still one of my favorite brands because of its neat, refined, and classic appeal.

Chic Couture

As stated by Google, couture is defined as the design and manufacture of fashionable clothes to a client’s specific requirements and measurements. Obviously, this is a perfect name for a fashion company….and it is! I’m sure most of you have seen some girls wearing those velour tracksuits while working out in the gym or running errands around town with the famous words “Juicy” or “Couture” on the back of the sweat jacket. These suits are a very famous product from a fashion company named Juicy Couture.
Pamela Skaist Levy and Gela Nash Taylor first started the company Juicy Couture in 1997, in Los Angeles. However, the company didn’t start out with the name, Juicy Couture. Levy and Nash started a business named, Travis Jeans, in 1995; however, in 1996, they changed the name to Juicy Couture expanding their company. In order to receive attention and publicity about their new brand, Nash and Levy started selling their clothing designs to celebrities to wear. This helped the company gain attention immediately. The first design the women introduced was the velour tracksuit. Madonna was the first to wear this design, which gained a lot of publicity for Juicy. After this, J. Lo, Paris Hilton, and Brittney Spears were also seen wearing Juicy. Juicy Couture became a very luxurious brand but was limited in accessibility until the 2000s. Juicy Couture was later purchased by the company, Liz Claiborne. Juicy merchandise can now be found in many large department stores such as Saks Fifth Ave, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus.
Today, Juicy sells much more than just their infamous “tracksuits.” Their merchandise has expanded into purses, jewelry, clothing, and much more. I was never very interested in the “tracksuits” but I do have a purse and a sweatshirt. I really like the glitz that is embroidered on Juicy apparel. The sweatshirts are usually embroidered with jewels or glitter that is not too flashy but adds some glam to regular gym wear. It is a very classy and fashionable brand that has grown and become very popular over the years.
