Welcome to the Lower Trail Mobile Application Project: A Portal to the Past

The Lower Trail Mobile App Project offers trail users a novel way to experience the Lower Trail. We offer a portal to the past—a time of canal boats and canallers, of steam engine whistles and screeching train wheels, of ear-splitting blasts and massive stone crushers, all sounds and sites of this very path over a century ago.

The beta version of the app targets 13 sites along the trail between the Flowing Spring Station and Mt. Etna Station trailheads. When nearing each site—most are located at or near benches or picnic tables—app users will receive a signal prompting them to explore some of the history tied to that location.

We have created this Site to invite feedback and to gather information from users of the Lower Trail. We are looking for

  • new information (images, news items of the era, stories)
  • details we may have missed
  • entries that need to be corrected

Please click on the menu above, then view the images and accompanying text for each of the 13 jump-off points. You can comment, make suggestions, or upload an image or URL by selecting the COMMENTS/FEEDBACK link located on the right sidebar (bottom) of each individual page. General comments, questions, etc. may be submitted here.

Below is a map of the current beacon locations along the trail; click on the map to enlarge.
