Dissemination and Implementation Science

To clarify what is dissemination and implementation science and why it is important to nutrition education and healthcare professions, we have to know what does dissemination and implementation means. According to the Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health, Disseminati on is the targeted distribution of information and intervention materials to a specific public health or clinical practice audience.Implementation is the use of strategies to adopt and integrate evidence-based health interventions and change practice patterns within specific settings. To disseminate and implement science is to infuse the profound theories of science into dail y practice of healthcare professions .This is extremely important to healthcare and nutritio n education in that these people are considered the ‘experts’ of health and nutrition ,They are the ‘media’ that conveys information about disease and health to common people. The qualities of their service and advice have direct effect on common people. Consider if we can translate the conclusion of a scientific research: The time before people benefit (lower CVD’s risk) from quitting smoking (which is originally considered 15 years) is actually 8 years. (American Heart Association, 2011) and translate this into clinical practice: post poster in smoking cessation center, add footnote to patient’s heart disease questionnaire, etc. Although the practice may seem trivial, the change it brings is significant. Patients could potentially benefit from these actions .On the other hand, the government could save a sum of money which can also be used in doing researches in return. In my opinion, it is very important that we have the ability to translate the abstruse results of research into something common people (who doesn’t have any knowledge on nutrition) could understand and agree to .In order to do that ,we have to comprehend the meaning of the results ,specify our target group(design different interventions to different target groups if necessary ) ,conclude the research in simple ,concise and understandable words and integrate our evidence-based conclusions and interventions into different settings (clinical ,community center, school) . A good example would be strataging a nutrition education plan of why calcium is important and how to increase our calcium intake for teenage girls in mifflin county in Pennsylavania using health belief model and trans theoretical .Another good example would be USDA has created myplates http://www.choosemyplate.gov/ .It has been proved successful in educating people of the nutritional science of food. Learning Dissemination and Implementation Science is very useful to me because I could expand the value of a research paper more than just new information on health-related issues but rather a way that I can improve my advising skill and expand my knowledge. But I still have some concerns about some troubles in implementing science into practice. First of all, we could overestimate what our patients understand about nutrition .For example, I suggested my father to become a vegetarian because the article on the benefits of being a vegetarian I recently read on nature medicine study. So my father decides to be a ‘vegetarian’ and eat no meat but only biscuits, muffins and chocolates .In this case, my father and mine interpretation of vegetarian mismatched and caused this misunderst … Continue reading
