Objectives, Assessments and Outcomes, Oh My!

Excellence in teaching is nothing new to Penn State.  For many years, the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence and the Royer Center before them has provided support and resources for faculty dedicated to improving their courses and engaging their students in the lifelong learning process.  They have done this by providing information and guidance on effective teaching methods, assessing student learning, providing workshops and grants for faculty, as well as a place for faculty to showcase their successes and share with other faculty.

Wordle graphic with teaching excellence termsFayette faculty documents their dedication to excellence in teaching by adding a component to their FAR reports that includes citing a particular learning objective, describing the assessment method for that objective, and then providing a short analysis of the assessment and student success for that objective.

On the following pages, faculty can find guidance for writing measurable objectives, aligning an assessment to that objective, and some ways of looking at the assessment and whether it accurately measures the success (or failure) of the students meeting the objective.
