The film Rudy is a sports movie, yes another sports movie cause I love them so much! Rudy Ruettiger (Sean Astin) wants to play football at the University of Notre Dame, but has neither the money for tuition nor the grades to qualify for a scholarship. Since he was a child all he wanted to do was play football for Notre Dame, but everyone around him always laughed at him when he brought it up. As life went on Rudy’s every move to go to Notre Dame got shut down, which led to him settling at the steel mill where his father works. With the death of his best friend (Christopher Reed) Rudy realizes that life is too short to be doing something you do not love. With the help of his friend D-Bob (Jon Favreau) he overcomes his dyslexia and gains admission to Notre Dame where he begins to fight his way onto the school’s football team.
Rudy’s journey to go to Notre Dame was not an easy one, he had to overcome many obstacles and take necessary but risky steps. The biggest step Rudy made was going straight from his best friend’s funeral to Notre Dame. He had to leave his girlfriend behind and all of his family to chase his dream. Thankfully, he had help from many people such as the football coach who told him never to give up, the priest who was able to give Rudy a shot at getting into Notre Dame, and the janitor who gave him a place to sleep while he was homeless. Each one of those men did their part to help Rudy get on the team and ultimately play the Georgia Tech game.
Pete, Rudy’s best friend who died, was the only person in his life that really believed in him. He always advised and pushed Rudy to leave the factory behind and pursue his dream to be a football player for Notre Dame. His death encouraged Rudy to go to Notre Dame because he felt that he had to make his friend Pete proud. Although Rudy was neither the biggest nor the best player in the team, he intimidated most of the players because of his persistence. This is a truly inspirational film; it teaches you that it is never too late to pursue your dream. It was extremely difficult for Rudy to get up and leave his family and his girlfriend. Also, he didn’t get accepted into Notre Dame the first time he applied; he was rejected two times before he was finally admitted. His need to succeed and prove everyone wrong was what led to his success. This film teaches you to have courage and to always follow your dreams no matter how crazy they may be.
Great post this week! I like that you chronicle a variety of genres in your posts. I’m not usually a big sports movie-watcher, but “Rudy” definitely looks interesting. Your posts are concise, but they captivate audiences enough to get them to want to watch the films presented.
