Fall 2023
ChE 497 — Experimental Polymer Science and Engineering
Undergraduate Elective / 3:05 pm – 5:05 pm / Tue & Thu / 112 CBEB
This course addresses the synthesis, characterization, and applications of polymers, spanning from industrial/commodity plastics to state-of-the-art research here at Penn State and at other institutions. The fundamental chemistry and physics underpinning polymers synthesis and characterization, and how the properties of polymers render them useful in many engineering applications, will be explored. A hybrid hands-on learning modality will be used to reinforce concepts and techniques, surveying experimental methodologies, data analysis, and multi-media (graphical/oral/written) presentation of data.
ChE 520 — Polymer Science and Engineering
Graduate Elective / 1:35 – 2:50 pm / Tue & Thu / 113 CBEB
Topics include: history of conjugated polymers, polymer phase behavior, chain- and step-growth polymerization and chemical modification of conductive polymers, polymer phase behavior in electric and magnetic fields, liquid crystal displays (LCDs), organic field effect transistors (OFETs), organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), xerography, and holography.
