A perfect example of expectations vs. reality.
This is honestly very funny to me, I’m actually laughing as I type this. My idea for this post was to create a halloween makeup look but obviously it didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to. I’ve actually done a look similar to this my sophomore year of high school and it turned out very well but unfortunately I didn’t have the same outcome this time. This time I didn’t have actual halloween makeup so I had to improvise. The look that I did previously was the half skeleton look and it turned out so well that my dance team decided to use that look for our dance competition. I do not have the picture of the original look but I do have pictures from our competition which still doesn’t look like as good as the first time.
The inspiration for the look that I did today was Aaliyah Jay (pictured at the top).
What I did to get the look above even though it was a fail:
- First I used my maybelline foundation
For this look I used the Maybelline Matte & Poreless foundation. I don’t usually wear this foundation but I used this because I had a feeling that it wouldn’t turn out the way it was supposed to. I’d rather use this one than to waste my good foundation
2. Then I used did my eyebrows(I usually to my eyebrows before foundation)
For my eyebrows I used the Maybelline Eyestudio pomade. I used this because it’s dark and I wanted by eyebrows to be bold. To conceal my eyebrows and make them cleaner I used the L.A. Girl Pro Concealer. This concealer is very popular and works very well while also being very affordable. To be honest I think that my eyebrows were the only thing that turned out nice.
3.Then I did the eyeshadow
As you can tell by the spilled eyeshadow it started off kinda bad. When I went to use the Nyx Purple eyeshadow I noticed that it was broke. I have no idea how it happened but it happened. I decided to use the purple eyeshadow because I wanted it to be a little different. Everyone always uses black for their eyeshadow when doing this. Honestly the eyeshadow didn’t turn out that bad.
4. Then I contoured and “highlighted”
To give my face a washed out look of a skeleton, I used the Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencil in the color white and applied it under my eyes and forehead. For skeletal makeup the countered is usually really harsh to show the shadows of the face. At first I used my normal contour stick but it didn’t really make a difference so I used the same purple eyeshadow that I used for my eyes for my contour. After I used the purple eyeshadow I began making the black lines on the side of my face to give the skeleton effect.
5. Applied glitter
I wanted to add something extra to try to make it better. I had the idea to put glitter on the black lines to “spice it up” but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to because the glitter was too dark. I used Nyx glitter and pigment.
Most of the products that I used were from Nyx which is my favorite drugstore makeup brand. Since this was such a fail, even though I took more pictures I decided to only use one of the pictures that isn’t completely embarrassing. This was just something fun that I tried and I’m thinking of trying to do it over. I was also really scared that I would break out but thankfully I didn’t (Skincare Routine )
The idea of Halloween makeup is so cool. It’s a really interesting application of skills, and because I have little experience with makeup, if I had attempted this it definitely would have been a much worse disaster. Also it sounds like you had fun in the process, which is awesome.
Great post, Maria! It’s really cool how you tried to replicate that makeup look. Recently, I just watched the James Charles and Kylie Jenner halloween makeup tutorial, and it looks like a similar look to the one you replicated. I like how you listed all the products you used and the order you did them in, it made following this post super easy.
