This post is now for the ladies. I will attempt to show you some costume ideas that don’t fall under the category of ‘basic’ but that are also cheaper and are (somewhat) easy to make. And I also enjoy creative ideas so some of them ay seem out there…
For my costume this year, I decided to go as Mary Poppins (a cute version). And if you like it please feel free to copy!
So here is the picture that I am basing my costume off of…
To make this costume, I went on Amazon.com and started looking up Mary Poppins costumes to see if they had any pre-made. Of course they did but they weren’t the style I was looking for (long dresses, elegant coats, etc.) They were pretty but to extravagant to wear out to parties and too expensive for me to buy. So I turned to Pinterest.com and began to look up what pieces I would need in order to make a skirt and a button-down shirt look like Mary Poppins.
Things I needed:
- white button down shirt with a little bit of detailing for a Victorian era feel
- navy/charcoal/black skirt that is a couple inches above the knee (can be structured A-line but it can also be flowy-er)
- A flat brim or curved bowler hat that is a comparable color to the skirt (please don’t mix navy and black… just a rule of thumb)
- Fake flowers/ red ribbon to add festivity to the hat
- A red bow-tie (I ended up getting a cheap $1 bow from the arts and crafts section of Walmart)
- A black pair of tights (Mary Poppins was modest)
- Black heels or flats (be comfy and go with the flats)
- And lastly a long, black umbrella (bird handle optional)
I luckily found every piece (aside from the skirt) in Walmart and for very reasonable prices! The umbrella was $5 and the flowers were a dollar each. The bowler hat was in the costume section ($10) and the tights and button down shirt were pretty inexpensive too. I did order the skirt online… Here is the link to it.
Overall I am really excited about this costume! It was cheap especially if you already have the skirt and the button-down.
The next one I found was on Pinterest and I was really amused by it! It is a take on the series Fifty Shades of Grey and I thought it was too funny.
I am trying to convince my friend Kaitlyn to go as it but so far its not working.
Anyway, all you need is a little black or gray dress and a buttload of gray paint samples. Like when I say buttload, I mean buttload. So hit up the closest Home Depot or Lowe’s and stock up!
You don’t need to cover the entire dress, I would suggest just the front that was you can sit without bending or losing any samples.
To attach them, I would suggest safety pins on the top-most paint samples and then tape/ glue the rest on top of each other, every so often repining the samples in areas where they seem loose. Then at the bottom secure them all with safety pins.
I really hope some one does this costume!
The last one I’ll show you will take more time to actually put on, but it is well worth it! You will need a good amount of costume make up as well as red lipstick and if you so desire, a brightly colored wig. It is a comic book character! I may try this one next year 🙂 What you’ll do is line the edges of your features with black face paint/face crayon (the packaged ones you find in Halloween stores). Then you’ll add a much of white dots in a somewhat symmetrical and patterned manner in order to create a purposeful design. The tear element is up to you… I wouldn’t add it because Halloween is happy. Then for the *POW* use the yellow and red to make it stand out. I would also consider using blush on the cheeks as well as lost of mascara to make the eyes pop (another tip with the eyes is adding white eyeshadow or white eyeliner along the water line of the bottom lashes in order to make the eyes appear comically large. Here is a link to this page where the image comes from that way you can see it bigger and more detailed!
I hope you enjoyed this blog! And if you have any questions let me know in the comment section!
Happy Halloween!!!

I really like these ideas. I’m a huge fan of creativeness and when a girl has a sense of humor. The 50 shades is hilarious. I hate when 20 girls dress as inappropriate cats so this is refreshing!

All these costumes are great and I really like them. They are inexpensive and look fun to make. I really hopes someone does the comic book character because that looks really cool and you could do it for guys as well. Over all the post was great! Keep up the good work!

These costume ideas are very adorable! I actually used Pintrest to determine what I was going to go as this year. The comic book character is by far my favorite but pulling it off will take some made skill and mad money. Lauren Conrad is a GODDESSSSS so I love her costume, and it looks like something you can wear even after Halloween.

I think all of these ideas are really creative. I always make my costumes for Halloween, so this got me really excited! I haven’t even started thinking about what to be for Halloween because I have been so busy. Thanks for reminding me! I’ll use some of these ideas to help me think of what to be.

I love your Mary Poppins idea! It looks like you have a great idea for what you want to wear for Halloween! I still have a total of zero ideas, so it looks like I need to get to work. I have to try to start thinking of something before it becomes too late! Very creative.

I absolutely love all of these ideas! Honestly, I am still struggling to make the final decision on what I’ll be going as this year. I love both Mary Poppins and Lauren Conrad, so it’s absolutely perfect! The last one is awesome, but my make up skills (and patience) are not that great so I think it’s out. I’ll consider the 50 shades, though! It’s pretty damn clever.
