PAS #5: Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa is located at the southern most tip of Africa. It is known as the hometown of Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 and a well-known, inspirational revolutionary politician who reshaped the country and the world at the same time. The country holds much cultural and societal history, like the Robben Island prison. Robben Island is located off the coast in Table Bay most famously used as a prison where people were sent to exile, and also a mental hospital. It was named a World Heritage Site in 1999, and since then has been a huge tourist attraction. Mandela was sent there for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government at the Rivonia Trial on June 12 1964 and was sentenced for 27 years, but only served a total of 18 there. He was eventually transferred and released after a total of 27 years. Another main attraction is cape_townTable Mountain, which lies in the core of the city. Standing on the top you can see the entire city and the beaches off the coast. The Atlantic and Indian Oceans come together at Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope which makes this place even more unique. Cape Town is also known as a city with a variety of unique people and cultures. People have said you cannot go a day without someone new talking to you among the streets. The 350 year old city is anything but stuck in the past. The world’s first heart transplant was done here, and the city is bouncing with new ideas and young people. Migration across the continent had brought more and more traditional Africans to the cape which has brought even more culture and history. The city is known to be liberal, enjoying the pleasurable things in life such as the beach, wine, food and art. Which makes sense that Cape Town is known to be loving and very laid-back. Tourism is a vital aspect to it’s economy, and it’s number one money-making business. A place like this seems heavenly and definitely has grabbed my attention. Cape Town is extremely different from the East Coast’s type A personality where everything has to be done in an instant and everyone is always in a rush. To travel to a country and continent so much different than the United States would be a blessing. Nelson Mandela has always been an idol to me and I have always been interested in his work. To have the opportunity to live in a culture so different, especially one like this, would be such a learning experience.
