Brian Su and Abby Tamara
Abby’s Cot Assembly Tool is an individual student project undertaken for the course Perspectives in Assistive Technology, offered at Stanford for the Winter quarter of 2021. This project was suggested by Abby Tamara, a senior citizen with mobility impairment and community partner for the class. The goal was to provide Abby, an avid camper, with a lightweight, low-to-the-ground camping cot that she can assemble easily and independently, as no cot that meets these requirements exists. As the pandemic forced me to work remotely and unable to meet Abby in person, I focused on making her current cot accessible to her. I developed a tool that allows her to easily and independently assemble her current cot, which she is already familiar with and which already meets her size requirements. Though this project was developed for Abby, Abby’s Cot Assembly Tool eases assembly of all camping cots with a bowed aluminum bar assembly, making this common type of camping cot accessible to a broad range of people.
