Hadrian

Hadrian was emperor from 117-138. His first order of business was to withdraw from costly countries; to focus more inward. Hadrian laid focus on every person in rome, as described in Boatwright as working “hard to show that he was approachable and cordial”. Hadrian worked to make sure that slaves weren’t needlessly killed, and he would often travel outside of rome, which made him even more accessible. Hadrian also often would hold council with his advisors, and would consult with the senate on many issues. Hadrian was also very concerned with the security of the empire, building a 73 mile long wall in England. Along with the wall Hadrian checked up on the army; ensuring their training was thorough and adequate. Despite Hadrian’s desire to keep peace; there were many uprisings and conflicts all the way up to his death in 138.
