Karan studied abroad on Singapore: National University of Singapore (Exchange Program) program in Spring 2017.
If you could give only one reason, why would you suggest other students study abroad?
Traveling and living in new places opens you up. It will be one of the best experiences you’d have in your life. You will also grow a lot as a person in terms of respecting other cultures and moving out of your comfort zone.
If you could go abroad again, what would you do differently?
I do not think I would do anything differently but I would surely like to go abroad again and again to new places. The most important thing for me was to make the most of my time there and explore the places around.
What was it about your program specifically that fit your personal goals over other programs?
The university at which I studied abroad (NUS) is one of the finest universities in the world for my major (Mechanical Engineering). This was something that was a key factor in deciding what university I wanted to study abroad at since I believe that the learning process should not be compromised.
What experiences did you have while studying abroad that you feel you could not have had if you had stayed at Penn State?
Being in a different culture, visiting the countries near Singapore, studying in a different college environment and challenging myself against all the insecurities.
What advice would you give to outbound study abroad students to help them make the most out of their study abroad experiences?
Everyone will tell you to research about the place where you are going to and know more about the culture and the university, etc. But my major advice would be know for yourself what you want to do when you are there, what experiences are you looking for (with an open mind) and have to courage to do the things that you want to do while you are there.
