Three of our lab members are enrolled in Dr. Sykes’ upper-level capstone chemistry course, CHEM 423W (Chemical Spectroscopy). In the most recent lab, the students build a mini-spectrophotometer from scratch. They were provided with circuit elements and constructed a power supply for a diode laser, then a photovoltaic circuit that detected and amplified the source signal. The spectrophotometer was tested on two solutions of bromothymol blue.
