The TED Talk that I decided to post about is the presentation by Susan Colantuano titled, “The Career Advice You Probably Didn’t Get”. This video especially spoke to me because it discusses the issue about women being stuck in middle management. Some women, no matter how hard they work or how dedicated they are, are passed over for promotions and advancements within the work place by their male counterparts. Susan speaks about how there is a missing 33% in the professional gender gap still. This is a surprising statistic that is constantly refuted. There are three compartments that are required to move up in leadership positions within an organization. An employee must: harness the powers in themselves, encourage others to fulfill their potential, and to be able to have a vision for where the company is going in the future, and how to get the company to get there. The first two points are heavily emphasized, but the last point is usually absent, according to Susan. Apparently, “it’s a given”. This is the piece of advice that helps employees make strides in their career, but many women are not even aware of its importance. This lack of advice is what accounts for much of the 33% of career discrepancy. The first two aspects are what help differentiate workers, while in order to break through to the higher management positions are accomplished through financial, business, and strategic acumen.
Her presentation was engaging and interesting, and while the subject itself may be considered as ‘dry’, she allowed her visual aids to put her dense concepts into simpler terms. She spoke clearly and loudly, and had a firm grasp on what she wanted to say without sounding over-rehearsed. Susan Colantuano’s TED Talk is able to pull in readers with an interesting story about a close friend, explains the problem, identifies what was causing the problem, and then closes her message with the same friend. To me, it was a well-organized presentation.
