From being a stripper to performing on the Grammy stage alongside Bruno Mars in 2018, Cardi B has come a long way. Cardi B has become one of hip-hop’s quickest-rising stars, with her hit single “Bodak Yellow” taking the No.1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on Oct. 7 and staying at No.1 for three consecutive weeks.
She’s broken multiple records on the Billboard charts in such a short amount of time, so many hip-hop fans wonder will she stand the test of time.
Cardi B began her rise to stardom when she became a stripper at the age of 19. She needed fast money to escape an abusive relationship and saw stripping as her only way out. While stripping at a club in New York City, Cardi began creating comedic videos on Instagram and Vine. She gained one million followers within a few months.
Cardi B’s bubbly and no-filter personality paired with her massive social media following landed her a spot on VH1’s hit reality TV show “Love and Hip-Hop” in 2015.
She immediately became the show’s breakout star. While on the show, Cardi B released her first mixtape “Gangsta B**** Music Vol. 1,” which peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in 2016. At the beginning of 2017, she released her second mixtape “Gangsta B**** Music Vol. 2,” which peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Her chart success led to her signing her first major record deal with Atlantic Records. Soon after signing, Cardi B decided to leave “Love and Hip-Hop” to focus on her music career full-time. In June of 2017, Cardi B released her hit single “Bodak Yellow,” which set her career into overdrive.
Since the release of her No.1 single, the rapper has done collaborations with the likes of G-Eazy, Nicki Minaj and Bruno Mars, to name a few. Cardi B also released her second single, “Bartier Cardi,” in early 2018. The Bronx native has become the third act and first rapper in history to have her first three entries in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Cardi B’s massive success has gotten her compared to female rap legend Nicki Minaj. These comparisons are quite premature since Minaj has been one of hip-hop’s most notorious acts for the past 10 years.
Throughout Nicki Minaj’s rap reign, multiple new female rap acts have made a splash in the industry but ultimately faded, such as Azealia Banks and Iggy Azalea, while the self-proclaimed “Queen of Rap” continued to reign supreme. Will the same happen to Cardi B?
Cardi B has recently gotten endorsement deals with companies like Amazon and Steve Madden, to name a few. The rapper also has a highly anticipated album set to be released in 2018, so her light doesn’t seem to be dimming anytime soon.
