Thoughts About Malcolm X and MLKJ

Malcolm X created the OAAU in order to bring together the African Americans who were not Islamic and the people of Africa. He believed that if the African continent progressed forward, then the African American movement would also progress. He saw the freedom and respect Africans had gained in such a short amount of time when he traveled there, and created an organization similar to their OAU. When he speaks of self defense, it sounds like he’s using it to justify the use of violence and force in his movement. I agree with him that they should be allowed to defend themselves; however, it feels like he’s twisting the words to allow violence.  Malcolm X says that “education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow only belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” I think he’s saying that the freedom movement would only move forward if the African-American population became more educated, which was impossible under the education quality of the time. It’s an important component because he believes education is the key to moving forward. Also, he wants to use the schools as a means to prove the African American race to the rest of society. He says to give the OAAU the schools that New York says it can’t improve, and let the African American society show you what it can do.

MLKJ’s explanation of nonviolence seems like it could take a really long time before any action came out of it. He says that the goal of nonviolence is to create a tension and crisis so great that it cannot be ignored anymore. I understand the success of his movement, but his explanation in that sentence makes it seem like nothing might’ve ever happened.
