“The milk chocolate melts in your mouth, not in your hand.”

M&M’s, named after Forrest E. Mars Sr., founder of the Newark Company, and Bruce Murrie, son of Hershey Chocolate’s president William F. R. Murrie, was created in 1941, by Mars Incorporated during the second world war. But the M&M’s of that time were not stamped with the famous M on the front until 1950. At that time, a bag of candy only cost 5 cents. Peanut M&M’s were produced in 1954. That same year, the animated M&M’s characters were all know and love were introduced along with the slogan, “melts in your mouth, not in your hands.” In the 1960’s M&M’s became available in red, yellow, and green. Nowadays, M&M’s are available in every color imaginable for any occasion.

It is common for people to order the candies for their special events. I remember at my brother’s wedding, he and his then fiancé ordered custom M&M’s. The candies were personalized and had their names and wedding date written on half and the other half had a picture of wedding bells. The M&M’s were white and a pale pink  color.

There are different varieties of M&M’s in production today. These include Peanut M&M’s, dark chocolate, almond, and peanut butter. The mini version of the classic  chocolate style was debuted in 1996.

The famous animated M&M characters have become a hit with consumers. Red and Yellow are and always have been the most popular characters and appear in a great number of commercials together, including ones for Christmas and Halloween. The first female character, Green, was introduced in 1997. Two years later, Orange was introduced as the paranoid crispy M&M.

In 2017, M&M’s was the top ranked chocolate candy in the United States with $688.7 million dollars worth of sales, and over 400 million are produced every single day. This top selling candy just goes to show that everyone loves a classic!

  1. I’m very curious to know what the creators were thinking about when they developed the idea of the M&M. Were they responding specifically to the problem of melted chocolate? Was there a certain experience that triggered this idea, like a melted chocolate bar in someone’s pocket that left a stain? Also, I wonder if history had anything to do with this creation. Was this inspired by the WWII troops so that they could carry a treat with them during battle?

My favorite part about M&Ms is the versatility of their design, like you stated in paragraph 2. They make the candy much more personal and fun. For example, gifting personalized M&Ms for someone’s birthday means a lot more than gifting them a traditional chocolate bar. M&Ms are a unique twist on chocolate and they can have more personal meaning beyond just candy.

  2. I really like your blog and I love M&Ms so much, but before reading your blog, I did not know much about M&Ms. The first paragraph of your blog introducing the origin of the name and the company is informative and the example you use for ordering M&Ms for special event is very new to me since I did not know about that.

  3. I really enjoyed the story about the personalized M&Ms your brother and his fiancee had made. It reminded me of the time I went to M&M World in Las Vegas a couple of years ago, and I was able to make personalized M&Ms for my little sister. It’s such a cute, meaningful thing to do. I really love M&Ms and I enjoyed learning the history of them from this post. It’s crazy to see how much the company has grown and to see all of the different kinds of M&Ms there are today. My personal favorite are the pretzel M&Ms.

  4. I think your blog is really interesting. I didn’t know any of this about M&Ms, so it was cool to find out from reading your blog. I also think it’s cool that your brother had personalized M&Ms at his wedding. I’ve seen ads for them before but have never had them.
I would be interested to find out why they decided to stamp the M on the front in the 1950s.

  5. I also think M&Ms are great for their versatility. I remember at my friends graduation party, his mom ordered M&Ms with his face printed on them. When my friends and I got to the party, I remember thinking that it was amazing that someone could order M&Ms with custom designs on them. I also thought they were ridiculous, because my friend’s face was so distorted that it was hard at first for me to associate the M&Ms with my friends face. At first, I thought one of my M&Ms was just dirty.

Learning about the history and inception of M&Ms was also very cool. The reason behind the creation was very interesting, especially because I disagree with them. When I eat M&Ms they always make my hand sticky because the coating always melts somewhat. However, that doesn’t make them any less delicious.

  6. Travelers benefit from driving directions. It helps drivers find the optimal route fast and accurately and gives traffic information to avoid major roadways. Trip planning is easier with these apps’ user-friendly UI. Relying too much on technology may impair driving attentiveness. This is a terrific tool if utilized properly.
