WE ARE… not tarnished forever

pennstatex-topper-mediumI invite you to do a quick Google search. If you type in ‘Penn State’ in the search bar, I can guarantee you there will be results on the first page pertaining to the Sandusky sex abuse scandal. It’s quite discouraging to see this in all honesty. I grew up my entire life in State College.  I assure you, it is a wonderful place. From its school spirit on football game days, to its beautiful landscape just on the outskirts that consists of a mixture of cornfields and mountainside. It is truly a remarkable place to grow up.

I remember just as the scandal was coming out, I was appalled. I couldn’t believe that such a man could do such a terrible thing, all the while giving my town, the place I call HOME such a terrible reputation. I heard so many stories of locals getting hassled for wearing Penn State attire or having a Penn State bumper sticker. I didn’t want to deal with it. It hurt me that my hometown had such a bad name for itself. People didn’t recognize us for being home of THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. No, much of society considered us sex offenders because of one mans actions. However, during these dark times, Penn State Pride was still present in many. In the weeks after the scandal there was still Penn State pride. Individuals didn’t stop supporting our school or hometown over one man’s sick actions. Penn State is so much more than that. We have one of the best women’s volleyball teams and men’s wrestling teams in the nation. We have the largest alumni association in the world. We have the largest student run philanthropy in the world. We host “blue outs” to prevent child abuse. The list goes on. When I saw this pride, I too wanted to support my home. I didn’t want to be ashamed of the place where I grew up. I wanted to proudly call myself a State College native. It’s this pride that has and will continue to bring Penn State to where it was before the scandal. This reputation will not last forever, because we are much bigger and stronger than the media thinks. They try to tear us apart and give us a terrible reputation, but I, and MANY more are till Penn State proud.

Social Media is Crucial for so Many Young Adults

How many times a day do you see your son or daughter check their phones to browse their facebook or twitter feed? My parents constantly remind me to put my phone away and lay off the social media because it consumes far too much valuable time.Social media sites and online communication wasn’t around when my parents were young, therefore it can be quite troubling at times for them to see the change in the young adult lifestyle due to social media. What they, and other adults should consider is that social media is essential for many teens. The amount of crucial information that passes through social media is unfathomable, and I would probably not be able to go about my daily routines without it. Social media is inevitable for many individuals in everyday life and cannot be avoided during this day in age due to the crucial information given, received and the constant need to communicate with one another.

To start, my entire boxing gym runs off of facebook. I find my schedule, events, matches, techniques, and every piece of martial arts information on facebook. If I happen to miss a day of training, the material is put in video format right on facebook for me to observe. I may not be getting my cardio in, but I essentially don’t have to go to the gym to learn new material. Not only that, but all upcoming fights and communication is done through social media. According to Zephoria.com, 16 Million business pages have been created on facebook as of May 2013. This shows that my gym is not the only business using social media to its advantage. More and more businesses and organizations are using facebook to advertise and to give out daily news. Many young adults constantly check social media to find this information about their gym, sports teams or even the latest news around the world. According to the Pew Research Journalism Project, 52% of Twitter users use the site to obtain news information. That’s over half of the individuals using the site as a whole! So, next time statisticbrain.com tells you that 22% of teenagers log onto facebook over ten times per day; you can have the peace of mind that it is very likely they are using it to become informed on important topics.

Not only do I and many other young adults constantly use social media to receive important information, but also use it to give out information. My brother is pursuing a career as a Pro-Am ATV racer. As he continues to progress in the sport it is crucial for his name to become more known so he will get better sponsors and a larger fan base. As his brother and assistant mechanic, I feel it is my duty to help him as much as I can to pursue his dreams. Social media helps do this by allowing me to post articles and interviews of my brother for people to read about. I keep people updated on his race results and upcoming races. Without social media it would be much more difficult to get this information across. I am constantly using social media to keep all information up to date and if there is any new news, I can share it with others.

My father was born in Ukraine, along with his sister and my cousins. Every couple of years I get the pleasure of seeing them in person, but unfortunately due to the distance I cannot see them often. However, social media gives us the chance to connect in a way as if we aren’t thousands of miles away from one another. Social media has given us the chance to communicate not just over the phone, now we can share pictures and videos of what’s happening in our lives and the distance seems to shrink. An article from, Pew Research Center states that 67% of those who use social media use it mainly to stay in touch with close friends and family. Facebook and other sites have made it very easy to keep in touch with close family and friends. It’s only natural to keep in touch with those whom you are close with. So it’s only logical that young adults will be on social media more.

Today, social media plays a huge role in many young adults’ lives. So much of our everyday essentials are found on social media so it is crucial that it is used daily to take full advantage of its widespread opportunities. Social media can’t be avoided for many young adults because of the information given, received and the constant need to communicate with one another. So next time you see your son or daughter checking social media, just know that we are entering a new era of technology and communication that is being revolutionized in ways that make it much easier to communicate, therefore we will use social media to communicate more often.
