poster describing Effects of Corrosion in Technology

PROJECT ADVISOR: Dr. Phuong Pham

ABSTRACT:

The presence of corrosion in several sectors of the technology industry, from semiconductors and microchips at the nanoscale level to degradation of materials on underground pipelines, leads to continuing efforts in the design and development of materials with improved physical properties. The aim of this presentation is to understand the main causes and types of corrosions and explore the potential solutions that can be used to mitigate the effects of corrosion in various fields of technology, such as semiconductors, battery, and oil/pipeline industries. In particular, the use of specific coatings such as sacrificial anodes to lengthen the period of the time of the degradation of a specific metal, or plasma generated oxide layer to protect the metal lines that connect the transistors from corrosive particles, will be discussed. In addition, the use of lubricant sealing to help prevent the formation of copper (II) sulfate and corrosion that occurs in battery terminals will be explored. While detection for possible traces of corrosion is crucial, preventing them from happening in the first place will help reduce cost and improve efficiency, as well as making advancements in technology. The need for creating solutions to reduce corrosion and continuing research and development of materials with corrosion resistance is of critical and great importance for the various industries.

  1. Advisor name missing from poster itself.
Project filed in wrong category? There are no experiment/data/results presented.

    • Thank you for your comment and feedback! Just to clarify, not knowingly I included the advisor names in the References section. The project was under a literature based review researching on the topic of the chemical effects in respect to corrosion. Will keep improvements in mind and build on suggestions for the future…
