The Channels initiative will host a screening of the film Those 4 Years and a Q&A with filmmaker Joe Thomas Karackattu on April 1, 2023, from 3:45–5:00 p.m. This event will be held at Hyatt Place State College as part of the Global Asias 6 Conference. All are welcome.

Those 4 Years journeys across three countries and reams of colonial office records to trace the history of nineteenth-century Chinese immigrants to India. It tells a hidden history that explains why the Nilgiris district is now known for tea production by cataloguing these diasporic people’s contributions to plantations, exploring places and sites associated with their earliest arrival, and locating some of their descendants.
