Quiznos: #1 Contender for Terrible Ads

I don’t think I’ve ever had Quiznos. And, after watching this commercial I am almost certain that it’ll stay that way. If I’m being honest, the ad was a good way to draw attention because it will forever be ingrained in my memory. However, I’m not sure Quiznos is capable of releasing another ad that will rectify the horribleness of this one.

I would definitely categorize this advertisement as bizarre, and not in a good way. Honestly, who thought this was a good idea? From a visual standpoint, the commercial was awful. From an auditory standpoint, the commercial was awful. And, from a persuasive standpoint, the commercial was awful.

The commercial begins with two rodents (I am unable to even distinguish what kind of rodents they are) edited in front of a Quiznos establishment. One of the rodents has speech bubbles, captioning exactly what it is saying, poor spelling and all. The font, shape of the bubble, actual speech included, and the punctuation of these speech bubbles rival the ugliness of the rodents themselves. As a commercial for food, the advertisement should have been at the very least visually appealing. However, the tasteless rodents and their prescribed thoughts overshadow any appeal of the food. At some point in the commercial the rodents switch to singing in front of and about Quiznos items; however, they still remain as the focal point. This highlights the fact that the commercial has failed in its responsibility to broaden my appeal to Quiznos’s food. I simply paid no attention to the food, making me unable to appreciate whether it looked delicious and entertain even the slightest thought as to whether it would be an eagerly awaited meal in the future. It seems unfair to both me and the company because Quiznos may have some really tasty and even visually mouth-watering choices, but because of this one commercial I am uncertain whether I would be willing to even try them.

During almost the entirety of the commercial, viewers are distracted by the inclusion of audio. One rodent is strumming a guitar, while another is obnoxiously singing—if you can even call it that—about how amazing Quiznos is. The harping scream-like sound of the commercial, except for the very end, is extremely annoying and makes even one second of this thirty second advertisement unbearable.

Although they may be slightly overused, there are definitely far more appealing and effective commercials to increase food sales. Even in a simple image, companies are able to invoke a sense of craving. Yet in thirty seconds, Quiznos did nothing of the sort.

This Quiznos advertisement has caused Quiznos to forever be associated with gross rodents in my brain. Logically, no one craves to go to a restaurant that has any sort of relation to rodents. In addition, the extremely subpar visuals and audio make the commercial seem childlike, destroying any credibility Quiznos may have had. Instead of drawing interest and making me eager to find a nearby Quiznos, this commercial has done quite the opposite. It has invoked such negative emotion that I hope to avoid Quiznos for the rest of my life, if I’m lucky. However, if Quiznos managed not to create any such feelings of hatred, feel free to take a look at their rodent-free menu (or so they claim).

Try the Chicken Carbonara. Or don’t. More for me; they’re divine!
