The Challenge

If you’ve never read a graphic novel, try one! I was helping Heidi Deren compile a list of recommended books for her HIST 121 (History of the Holocaust) class and discovered The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman. This book, also known as Maus: A Survivor’s Tale, is a compilation of Spiegelman’s graphic novels My Father Bleeds History and And Here My Trouble Begins.

I had never read a graphic novel before and honestly didn’t think I would like it, but I found this book hard to put down. It’s a memoir of the author and the complicated relationship he has with his father, a Holocaust survivor.

The Rules

A subject search in The CAT on the term graphic novels will yield results on those items that have been cataloged using the genre index term Graphic novels. Since not all graphic novels have been cataloged with an index term, it will be helpful to do a second search on the Subject Heading comic books.
