Think Before You Speak

As if parents who have children with special needs don’t have it tough already. Aside from the intensive care, constant attention, and worry for their child, others only seem to add to the stress.

Jane McCready confesses how she truly feels, on a website called “the guardian”, towards those who make her life a little harder because she has a child with disabilities. She explains how not only children, but parents as well look at her child as if they are something that has never been seen before or as if they are a nuisance to everybody around. Jane goes on to tell some of her experiences when her son threw temper tantrums in a store. She could feel everyone staring at her and knew that they felt that she was being extremely disruptive and inconvenient in the store. Also, she tells of a few of her friends who have officially decided to not even take their children with disabilities out in public anymore because of the type of responses they receive when things go wrong.

“A little bit of help goes a long way” says McCready. Rather than people just staring and acting with ignorance towards the situation, why not offer some help because many do not understand, nor realize the amount of energy it requires to deal with a child containing disabilities on a daily basis. I love this story because it comes from someone who must experience these rude people for a living.

This is a good reminder to think about how it would feel if this were you in a situation instead of making comments and joining the majority of the crowd!!
