Artifact: UN Women’s Campaign
A.Description of the artifact:
1.The Google Search bar and the “suggested search” option- The Google search bar is located over the woman’s mouth to symbolize the lack of voice woman suffer from. The suggested search option describes different searches that show the inequality woman face today, such as “women need to be disciplined” and “women cannot speak in Church”
2.The Women in each picture- Each of the women if from a different nationality or ethnicity to represent this is a world-wide problem. All of them look solemn and have their mouths covered by search bar.
3.The fine print on the bottom of the page- the small print reads “actual Google search on 09/03/13.”
B.Effectiveness of the Add
1.Pathos – Women all over the world can relate to the woman in each advertisement. Men can also relate to some extent from the options in the suggested search (from witnessing these things either in real life or though the internet)
2.Logos- The fine print at the bottom indicates a fact that makes this add even more shocking. It states that these were actual Google searches, so it shows this is a real problem.
3.Kairos- The Google search option marks that this problem still exists in the modern days and it appeals to anyone who uses these search bars.
i.Political debates over women and campaigns such as “YesAllWomen” make this add even more relevant.
C. How is this Civic Engagement?
1.Artifact does not actually state “support women’s rights” anywhere, however it does present a message that there is a problem with society
2.Encourages the public to stand for a certain idea/campaign.
i.This encouragement might lead the public to get involved in promoting women’s equality in their community.
D.Ideas Portrayed and Targeted Audience
1.Demonstrates that discrimination against women is not completely gone and that it is a universal problem.
2.Targets especially young people who are the group constantly using the internet to find information.
i.Tries to sympathize with other secondary audiences with the women on the add and also the phrases listed on the “suggested search” Bar
3.Defies stereotypes that portray women as weaker or less capable, such as “women cannot drive” or “women should be in the kitchen”
E.Conclusion
1.Positive impact on society by informing the public that the issue s still present
2.Encourages the stop of this wrong behavior with the phrases at the bottom ex. “women should have the right to make their own decisions” and “women shouldn’t suffer from discrimination anymore”
Asad Karamally says
This speech is a very relevant topic as the education of women in the developing world is a hot issue right now. By bringing more media attention to this cause, more funding may be able to be secured. I really liked your speech but you may have been able to get into more depth if you had kept it a little more concise.

This was one of my most favorite speeches among everyone in our class and the topic you chose was great and impressed by the way you tried to make your point.I share the same view.Every year during my elementary and high school, the top 3-5 students in our class was mostly girls. Our prime minister is even a female so I support the idea and I believe woman are just not only equal as men but most women and girls have the ability to succeed further and create a bigger impact in society than an average male.
