I’d like to report that I have in my possession two specimens of what I believe to be Oulimnius nitidulus ((LeConte) 1866) (Coleoptera:Elmidae).

These were collected by the author from Powdermill Run at Carnegie Museum’s Powdermill Nature Reserve at approximately 2 PM on July 24, 2013 (precise latitude and longitude to be made available after a bit more tinkering with the GPS, but it was directly behind the cabin where we stayed the night). Specimens were collected by disturbing the run’s rocky substrate with a D-frame kick net.
Preliminary attempts at species identification were made through the use of photographs of the two known North American species of Oulimnius (des Gozis 1886) available on Bugguide courtesy of my home institution, the Louisiana State Arthropod Museum (LSAM). Further confirmation of apparent differences in species came from the original species descriptions by LeConte (1866) and through examination of images of his types provided by Harvard’s MCZ Type Database. H.P. Brown 1983 reports this species from NY, NJ, DE, MD, WV, VA, CT, MS, AL, TN, GA, SC, and NC.
One specimen labeled as Oulimnius latiusculus ((LeConte) 1866) was available for examination at the Frost; however, after examining the aforementioned images, I now question this identification.
At this time, I intend to retain these specimens and report back with further findings after in-person examination of materials available at LSAM upon my return home.
Stay tuned!
“At this time, I intend to retain these specimens and report back with further findings after in-person examination of materials available at LSAM upon my return home” … and deposit one at PSUC.
Sure. I’ll ship one of them back with some other stuff from back home for the PSU collection.
