Last week’s louse (Friday Night Lice – week 2), Microphthirus uncinatus (Ferris, 1916) (Anoplura: Enderleinellidae), is a specialist on flying squirrels. Those particular specimens were collected off a northern flying squirrel, Glaucomys sabrinus (Rodentia: Sciuridae), in Yosemite National Park.
You can see the specimen records associated with those two images in our database: PSUC_FEM 10005501 (female) and PSUC_FEM 10005504 (male). They’re in our collection now, but I strongly suspect they belong to the Essig Museum at Berkeley, as they appear to be part of the type series (that is, the species observed for the original description of the species by Ferris).
