Jeffrey Dahmer

The Milwaukee Cannibal

Busted

Jeffrey Dahmer is probably one of the most well known serial killers and convicted sex offenders. He was the culprit for murdering 17 men between 1978 and 1991. His crimes were centered around rape, dismemberment, necrophilia, and cannibalism. He is so famous, in fact, that they made a movie about him last year. Personally, I have not seen it since it’s not on Netflix, but it is definitely on my must-watch list. (However, the actor who plays him is the Ross Lynch from Austin and Ally so I feel like it will be hard to take him seriously).

The Crimes

Jeffrey’s first victim was a hitchhiker that he invited back to his place to have a beer. When he tried to leave, Dahmer hit him with a dumbbell simply because he did not want him to leave yet. He went ahead and dissected the body, which made the body unidentifiable after all of the pulverization. Later, he began visiting gay bathhouses and drugging and raping the men he found there. He began killing again after he would pick up men at bars and clubs and lure them back to his place. He began using the bodies after they were already deceased and keeping body parts for later consumption. Eventually, he was arrested for sexually assaulting a 13 year old boy, so he was put on the sex offender’s list and given five years of probation. He went on to commit a killing spree and began doing crazy things to the bodies such as boiling the bodies and keeping decomposing bodies; this unusual behavior led to making unusual noises. Neighbors complained, but he managed to remain under the police’s radar for a while until he was ultimately caught in 1991.

The Psychological Profile

Young Jeffrey Dahmer

Unlike the previous killers I’ve outlined, Dahmer had a relatively normal childhood. However, he became a lone wolf as he entered adolescence. He had very little social interaction in high school and became a heavy drinker at an early age. He showed a fascination with animals and their internal organs, which is one of the early indications that someone may be a serial killer. He also dropped out of college due to his alcoholism, causing more emotional issues to add to the many that he already had.

The One that Got Away–And Got Him Caught

Dahmer’s ultimate defeat was on July 22, 1991 when his last attempted victim escaped and found the police. Tracey Edwards ran out of the apartment handcuffed and alerted the cops to the horrors that lay inside Dahmer’s place. Inside, the police found photo albums full of Polaroids of body parts, decapitated heads in the freezer, and a 57 gallon drum full of several decomposing bodies and chemicals in his bedroom. He ultimately got  charged with 15 murders in the first degree and received 957 years in prison. Once incarcerated, he was attacked by another inmate twice, and the second time left him on the brink of death. Jeffrey Dahmer died on November 28, 1994 on the way to the hospital.

  1. I think I mentioned this in a previous comment but seriously, this is one of my favorite things to read about. I’m taking a criminology course on wrongful conviction and hope to work in law later on, so any type of crime, even the gruesome is super interesting to me! If you think I’ll hesitate to find this movie you’re talking about you are so wrong! My roommate and I watch documentaries about killers all the time so this would be perfect for a night when we want to blatantly procrastinate. I think Dahmer is so interesting because while yeah he killed a lot of people, there’s really no other killers that enjoyed taking bodies apart and keeping them especially for consumption. I will admit I get a bit squeamish when thinking about the details of his crimes but it’s still super interesting!

  2. Wow… this guy is crazy. I’ve never heard of him until now. It was interesting to read his childhood story because like you said, it wasn’t similar to the other people you have talked about. It’s crazy to read what these people’s childhood lives are like. Thank god for Tracey Edwards; as sad as her situation was, it was great she was able to escape!! Can’t wait to read about more crimes!

  3. I’ve been wanting to watch My Friend Dahmer since I saw the first trailer! I noticed it was on demand over the summer, but I just haven’t gotten around to watching it. It’s insane to me that these serial killers can go so long without getting caught! It’s so strange to think about how many more people he would have killed had it not been for Tracey Edwards. Your blog is super interesting and I can’t wait to read more!
